Yes I made my own starter. I used yeast and let it ferment on the counter for a little over a week. Then I kept it in the refrigerator.

I have made my own starter but it wasn't especially good. I think it depends on the natural yeast in the area. We apparently don't have tasty yeast in our air around here.
I used some rye flour along with wheat (as was suggested by the recipe), but after a few changes out, the bitter taste of the rye should have been gone. It just never did make good bread.
