Grump here ... on the basis of 2014 searches and changes in usage over time, with a pinch of over-analysis thrown in, culture is Word of the Year.

I was reading the other day that there are 5 times more Americans employed in public relations than as journalists. I kid you not!

You'd think that someone might have asked an anthropologist about culture! The concept is absolutely central to the discipline.

The whole thing shows something about the press. In the world of News Media, the US will send its military off to invade another country without journalists ever asking someone, "just who are the people who live there? How are they different from others and from each other?"

The culture of the press ... it shows up in everything from year one.

How are knowledgeable people portrayed?
