Some of you may remember my whining about chickweed.I am half way through the worst of it. See the before and after in some daylily beds.

Whoa! You have a LOT of daylilies girl! That's a lot of weeding too, looks great! I bet your back is aching and your hands are sore about now. Your soil looks wonderful. :)

Why is it called chickweed? :idunno Your daylillies look awesome! Would love to see a pic of when they are all blooming. I bet you have a lot of different colors too!

I am guessing because chicks love it. But why is anything named the way it is? I feed it to the horses after pulling and they too love it. My back is aching and I have way to much to do! What you see is a fraction-the rest is not yet done. The biggest problem with chickweed is it grows all winter no matter how cold it gets. I read it was brought by the early settlers-it is edible though I have not tried it. I started with the worst weed filled beds.

If it tasts like it smells, no thank you; I'll pass on the chickweed salad. Even my chickens don't like it. The only saving grace is that it is easy to pull up.

My grand daughter was using all her 12 year old persuasive powers to try to get me to buy a rabbit last week. I probably would have if I had a cage. Rabbit poop is garden magic, even more so than chicken poop. At least I would have lots of chickweed to feed it.

Can you do a local manual extinction of the chickweed by getting it all and keeping up with the seed sprouting? hand pulling and picking...
