Nice gift

One of the seed companies, and I don't even remember which one, included a package of free seeds with my order. The seeds were for a French Marigold called Sparky. I was not even going to bother to plant them, because I thought: how nice can they be if they give them away? I am glad I planted a few because they are rather nice.

It's beautiful! Seed companies give away extras. They also give away new seeds to repeat customers. They then ask your opinion on the variety.

Oh I love french marigolds! They are pretty and I interplant them in my garden for bug and bunny control. They work great! I only planted like 5-6 this year which wasn't enough. I forgot to save seeds from last year. They was a very nice and useful gift of seed!!!

I like it Jackb. I don't have any in my garden, there's just not enough room. Maybe next year, I'll plant some in front of my veggie rows. They probably gave them to you because you were a good customer, meaning it was a big order! I once went to the Baker Creek store and bought 3 packs of seeds and they gave me 2 free ones. I felt kind of guilty because I didn't buy much. I passed them on to friends who had the right climate for watermelons.

The thing to do is save the seeds, and it's REALLY EASY. Don't dig them up in the Fall. Wait until maybe, January, and break off the dried flowers. They are FULL of bunches and bunches of seeds, and they are dry by that time. I opened them into a bowl on my kitchen table, then poured that through a funnel into a labelled glass jar.
I did this with only TWO plants last year, but I had enough seeds to scatter into most of my beds, and most of them have sprouted.
They like it WET, so prepare to water them a lot.

I planted French marigolds along one border of my garden, and interspersed among other plants this year. I do feel it has helped repel insects; I have had very little problem with any bugs at all. (knock wood!) Now if I could just get rid of this mole!
