I planted my horseradish (thanks Lesa! :D ) in the spot where my old compost pile used to sit. I had composted kitchen scraps there for over 5 years. Very nice dirt, lots of worms. I went to dig a hole 4 feet over for some new rhubarb plants I just bought and found a couple of super long, 3/4" thick horseradish roots growing underground in that space...FOUR FEET over.

I'VE CREATED A MONSTER!!! :ep :th

Thank goodness it's up against the back of the garage and away from my garden and other plantings. It's such an ideal spot for the rhubarb that I may try to move the horseradish to a less advantageous spot...far, far over the hill! LOL

Best horseradish I've ever tasted, btw. I must find more recipes to use it in!

Dad liked horseradish.

When I began gardening in his backyard, we moved it. It kept coming back in the same location! I wanted compost bins there and dug about 10" of soil out of the bottom of them. Piling on the compostables - you go about 6' above grade and that keeps the horseradish from coming thru the pile.

They came back in the concrete blocks I used for bins! They were all pulled and when they came back for yet another season - they went the way of death by herbicide. The ones that were growing here in my yard at home when I moved here - forget it! They were in a perfect place for a flower bed. Strangely perhaps, I went with iris. Very carefully over a 2 year period, herbicide killed the horseradish there, also.

I can use so little horseradish that 1 jar from the supermarket will last a year. And, DW likes the stuff!

Oh Steve, so you're telling me there is no hope? :hit

And here I was afraid of killing it when I first planted it. This is one plant that can look out for itself! I wish my roses had that kind of will to live...

I am so glad I bought a quarter of a beef last year....maybe I need to buy a whole one this year. It's really good baked on a roast. It turns sweet, not spicy, after cooking and adds a special "something" that you couldn't put your finger on if you didn't know it was horseradish.

ETA: Yep, Lesa, you did warn me! That's why I put it at the back of the garage. I should have known all that compost-rich soil would have turned it into the Incredible Hulk!

A buddy of mine grows horseradish in 6" PVC pipes. He cuts the pipes to about 5' lengths and fills them with garden soil. Then he just plants the stuff in the pipe. It grows great. The funny thing is when he leans it where ever he wants then moves it out of his way later. I have heard him say several times, "Where the heck did I put the horseradish?"

When he wants to harvest it, he just beats the pipe on the ground to knock the dirt loose and pulls the whole thing out.

:yuckyuck Horseradish in a pipe! :gig

My experience with horseradish is the prepared stuff in the little jar. I mix it with ketchup, tabasco, worchestershire and garlic for a shrimp sauce. Never had fresh.

Ya'll please enlighten this ol' redneck gal about fresh horseradish and what you do with it. How do you cook with it and will you please send me a start of it? i think I can find a pipe around here........

HORSERADISH: One of the plants that they'll take to Mars so they can fill the atmosphere with Oxygen!

Those grow real well in Montana too. And yep, my dad loved Horseradish too.

Bay! You mix it with Tobasco??? Whooo, that'll wake you up in the morning!

But remember, ALWAYS AND WELL, Hot in, Hot out!

Mine is growing in a half whiskey barrel. I still haven't harvested any of it... :hide Fall just isn't a good time to worry about it for me, life goes crazy and then I'm so tired I just want some winter to rest up

Journey, maybe you could open a "pick your own" horseradish patch this year! :)
