Well some people have the family name Rice and I think there are also some people whose family name is Groat, an old spelling of oat (either that or a four-pence piece). There may be some Barleycorns too, or that could just be in the song.

I had a friend with the surname of Nickles. She married beneath herself when she became Mrs. Penny.

Dad had a student with the surname of Annapopalous. She didn't get a break with her marriage when she became Pannapopalous.

So.....who wants to name their newborn Tomato? Eggplant? Okra? Lettuce? Carrot? Or what about Watermelon or Cantaloupe? We think flower or tree names are pretty or manly, but NO vegetables! ...

I must have been ready to doze off when I read that. I got 2 meanings out of the post. One was what was intended: we don't give newborns vegetable names.

The other I've been thinking about for 2 days: some people must be bonkers giving names to new varieties of tomatoes and such!

Turkey Chomp, Dancing with Smurfs, Girl Girl's Weird Thing ... no, I'm no kidding. Those are actual names people have given their introductions to the world of tomatoes!

I'm thinking of what to call the red, early Kellogg's Breakfast tomato if it comes out nicely this generation . We've already talked a little about @marshallsmyth 's Safeway Cluster and Lemon Boy dehybrids.

Even if you tried doing these sorts of things from the get-go, they would have different genes. If they are genetically stable and there is value to these varieties -- they deserve a name! BTW, I can imagine all sorts of value and I'm nearly dizzy from holding my breath waiting for this year's results!
