She got me a Sumac start.

I've wanted a nice Sumac. Wifey gave me this bare root thing that looked like a dead stick, but with a fine root system. Four days after planting here's what it has done.

Growing fast, it's in the greenhouse, when it gets larger I'll plant it in the earth inside the garden area.

Watch out for it, Sumac spreads fast. A nice lemon flavored drink can be made by soaking the seed heads in warm water and I've heard they can be used in place of lemon in jellies but haven't tried it.

Wow! We planted some sumac towards the edge of our meadow. It didn't take off like that! Yes, it can spread like crazy, but where we put it, that is OK.

I guess there are a few varieties here its a weed tree, very hard kill.

We have oak leaf sumac, I wanted this variety. I hope it spreads fast.

Does the Sumac you're talking about have this sort of leaf?

I thou ght the whole name was poison sumac.

There is a Poison sumac it has white berries, this variety will have Red berries.

With Socrates it was poison hemlock.

This site never ceases to amaze me. I am stunned that anybody would actually WANT sumac. I have the red sumac and would jump for joy if they all died. Working diligently to eradicate them! They choke up fence rows, spread by seed and roots, invasive, take over and are PESTS. I burn them, pull roots and burn them too. The durn things are every where. Want some more? ........muttering to self about sumac murder.......

I would have loved to have found someone with Staghorn Sumac they wanted rid of. I want a stand of Sumac like the one you speak of. Sumac is an important part of our kitchen.
