Last night after work I needed to run to pet store for more parrot food. I have a fountain at work, a lot of times clients dog drink from it. I will not use any chemicals to control mosquitoes, When it warms up I been putting minnows for control. The minnows are 14 cents each. After grabbing a bag of parrot food I went to fish dept. Tank of minnows was full the fish that looked active and healthy . Then I made mistake of looking at display of bettas next to them. A cobalt blue fish caught my eye, he was $7.99. Instead of 42 cents I left with $7.99 mosquitoe protection. I can admit I fall for pretty every time.

I think it might work.

But, he's gonna be pretty lethargic at your outdoor water temperatures.

I used to keep my bettas at room temperature. What I was reading then was that was standard operating procedures for Thailand and Florida. But, l wasn't keeping fish in those locations.

Steve did not think about cold blooded not feeding if cold. Goldfish and minnows like cooler water then tropical fish. Whole point is eating mosquitoes. Fountain is in shade, need to find out water temperature .

Go for the gold. Imagine how upset you'll be when a raccoon or passing bird sees your beta as lunch. The goldfish I get are cheap, easily replaceable, and were raised a feeders so having them becoming part of the circle of life doesn't torment me.

@Nyboy, a few years ago.....15? 20? it was all the rage to have a big clear vase with a flared neck, about a 3 or 4 inch opening. Betta in the water, bare root peace lily in the top part, suspended in a clear little cup with a hole in the bottom for roots. Roots would be in the water with the betta. I imagine there are pics on pinterest. It was a pretty good setup, actually.
I sold a jillion of those.

bettas love planted tanks to rest on the plants & having filtration is nice to keep the water clean longer but is not needed if you change their water 1/week. i have my boy & a girl in my 20 gal with plattys & some snails that keep the algae at bay.
