The Big Difference in Latitude

Or, is it "attitude?" . Something Vfem said about northerners making quick progress in their gardens made me think of this.

Hours of Daylight, June 21st:

New Orleans is just about on the 30th parallel north.

The 35th parallel north defines the border between North Carolina and Georgia. I was born just north of 35N in Carmel, California.

40 north forms the boundary between the states of Kansas and Nebraska. It passes thru Denver Colorado and Philadelphia.

The 45th parallel is also in Canada but starts in North America in Oregon and runs across thru Ontario and Quebec thru southern New England.

Winnipeg, Manitoba is on 50N and I garden just 2 south of that line.

Alaska and northern Canada. 55N is north of Edmonton, Alberta.

Yeah, I thought of that whem I saw that post. The extra length of daylight between the spring and fall equinox. That is probably why Alaska can grow those huge cabbages. A relatively cool climate and really long days to grow in.

You have to pick your crop though. When I was in Denmark I had to put the tomato in a greenhouse or they would never get ripe. They'd grow OK, just never ripen.

That reminds me of a phrase I stole from you. "All gardening is local"

Europe is really far north! While I was looking at Wikipedia for examples of cities on 55N here is Derry, Northern Ireland.

Berlin, Germany is 52N!

Even Paris is 49N.

All warmed in some fashion by ocean and atmospheric currents from the south, even from Africa. A change in those currents, which probably happened during the last Ice Age, would be disastrous to northern Europe.

I do definitely love our loooong summer days. Only thing is, i forget to eat! It will be 10 pm, sun's just setting, and i start thinking "dang, what can we make quick for dinner!?"

Heat up some of that soup you canned last year, break out the cheeze and crackers. Not that I've ever done that, at least not since last night.

I have never been able to quite adjust to it.

There was a study of how the body reacts to moves from one place to another. The body show physical changes from the loss of a home, the study compared it to changes that occur during grief.

Believe it or not, even when people are "happy" to leave and "happy" to be somewhere else - their bodies still show these signs. It doesn't mean that they are kidding themselves. It is just that adjustment takes some time. For me, it has been 45 years . . .

The rapid changes in daylight -- I just can't keep up with them! I hate, hate, hate daylight savings time!! It doesn't just take me a week or 2, a month later I'm still struggling with irregular sleep. Of course, I'm terrible in December! The failing light just drags me down w i t h i t.
