This morning a screeching from the basement brought me out of my pre-coffee coma. I feared one of the 6-week old chicks had gotten caught in the chicken wire fencing that surrounds the black tub prison they are in.
I creaked down stairs and around the corner, in time to see Roger Rooster attempting his first crows! "er-AWRK!..... er-AWRK!" Haha, not trapped, just feeling his oats. I'm not very knowledgeable about roosters, but it seems to me that 6 weeks is pretty young to try to crow. Do I have a chicken prodigy? :clap

Such an awkward time in a young rooster's life... I had 6 roosters learning to crow this summer and it was so bad I couldn't sleep with the windows open at night. It took me awhile to figure out where that awful noise was coming from. I thought a cat was in heat or dying or something.

I'm not sure which of us has the prodigy. My 'newest' rooster is going on six months. His comb is smallish. His wattles are no bigger than his "sister's?" are. Except for his size and a few suspicious feathers near his tail, I wasn't sure until today if the chicken was a he or a she. Excellent attempt at camouflage! That means he escaped the invite to dinner twice now unlike the four obvious roosters. Today I heard that first crow. Not a first attempt, I'm sure, but a full fledged, "Cock-a-doodle-do." Tsk, Tsk! Should'a kept his mouth shut and started laying eggs. Alas, his days are numbered on one hand.

You're right, Chickie'sMomaInNH! I suspect I wouldn't feel sure until I heard him crow or saw her sitting on an egg. Adorable as he is, I fear I would never be able to invite him to dinner unless we were having BOSS.

it's a good thing he lives up to his name. his dad certainly gave him a lot of his personality, very sweet and friendly! he used to hop in my lap before he started crowing a month ago, but he tends to be submissive and lets the girls get there first. then he stands beside me and will gently pick any shaving off my clothing or let me give him a gentle pat while i talk to him. the feathers around his face filled in and now his eyes are harder to spot with all that frizzling. somehow he can still see everything going on around him. looks more like a frizzled polish than a frizzled faverolles, but i love him and hope he's been breeding a few of my hens. i have yet to witness that too.
