Here in the high desert, we kind of frown of lawns (eat up too much of our precious water). But we have a teensy weensy little yard (like 25 square feet). A small amount of old grass is coming back, but we'd like to lush it up. We've bought seed...hints?

On an area that small, maybe capture some of your bath water or wash water and use that. If you can stick with your native grass it should not take that much water, but it is liable to be bunch grass, not the kind that sends out runners and makes a lush lawn. And depending on your local laws, you might get a visit from someone official if you have a lush green area. Sometimes they want the brown water to go down the drain so it can be treated and released into the system for someone downstream to use it after Mother Nature has purified it a bit more.

Alfalfa pellets work well over grass seed, DG.

That kind of mulch has a fair amount of nitrogen in it. Of course, it protects the soil and seeds from drying. The pellets also deter the sparrows who seem to think that they are being offered a free meal when grass seed is sprinkled on the soil surface.
