Winter Rye

How do I plant winter rye? Do I just toss it on top of dirt like grass seed. Stopped by nursery was very cheap, $2.99 a pound picked up 3 pounds. Even if it doesn't improve soil would rather look at something growing then bare clay all winter. Does it grow all winter in zone 5?

I sometimes plant winter rye, not a lawn type, for winter pasture. I just scatter the seed and wait for rain. It grows all winter and dies when it gets hot. Dunno about your winter though!

We scratched it in a little with a rake, but I am not sure that was necessary...

I don't think it is good for horses.

Here they fly it on. It grows where it lands. Can't mess it up anyway you do it.
