I like my beaten and battered hats ..
. until they shrink so much from regular washing that they make me look like Jughead in an Archie comic book.
Here's a tip... well, maybe just an idear. I was suspicious of the stain remover spray so, I rub the sweat band with shampoo. Then, it goes in the washer. Never in the dryer, in fact, I'm inclined to happily wear them to air dry.
