Puff balls are edible when young and solid all the way through but the taste is sort of bland. When I was a kid we called them sneezing powder and used to sneak up and puff them in someones face. It almost always caused a sneezing fit.

Thanks, Carol. I forget-- what time of year do they puff? Is it all year round or a specific time? Fall?

I didn't know they were edible, hoodat! Interesting. Are they tasty?

Look for giant puffballs from late summer through mid-fall anywhere in North America.

They have very little taste of their own but soak up the taste of whatever they are cooked with.

Interesting! Thanks for the info Carol and Hoodat.

My sister can't remember hedge balls! I can't believe it. But she does remember puff balls fondly. How could anyone who grew up in the Midwest NOT remember hedge balls??
