What will happen if I plant them next to each other? My mother-in-law says its a big no no but I have read that only if you keep the seeds and replant you will have problems but if you dont its ok...is that true?

Thank you!!! ;)

First year should be no problem. The second year, the seeds will produce a combination of what their parents were (could be a mixture of gourds and pumpkin genetics).

i had planted a lime tree and a orange tree right next to each other about 6 feet away from each other and the oranges truned out to be sour but the limes were really good. someone told me that i planted the orange tree too close to the lime.

Just to be safe I put watermellons between my pumpkins and gourds as well as the squash and zuchinni. I wasnt sure if only 1 year would cause issues or not. Good to know that it should be ok either way!

I always thought that you would be ok as long as you were not keeping seeds to plant for the next year.
