I do that with my kids, but that's because it is my job to teach them manners. And it works like magic, they always respond with a belated thank you.
Whether it was a big deal that you said it or not, I do hate that your visit with your dad was so adversely affected by it.

Some of us are just more helpful than others. I will hold the door open for anyone behind me -- young adult or old foggie -- with just as much cheer as I will accept (and thank) anyone who holds the door for me. I've never been one to stand back and let/force the gentleman to open my doors. Neither do I refuse the gentleman who offers that service. Human kindness trumps woman's rights every time, IMHO.
