From a couple days ago at my "off-road" location to stop and take a sunrise picture:

It seems so bright I thought it had to be a planet but, right now, I'm not sure. I guess it is Sirius, the dog star. I'd have to see the other stars around it to locate the constellation and they'd faded in the sunrise. The dog is jumping on Orion! I did some enhancing because the colors were muted, maybe because the dang flash goes off.

Nice shot!! As far as your colors being muted - i'm wondering if you could try "tricking" your camera into using a different exposure. See how the lower half of your picture is all black? Well i think your camera thinks it shouldn't be like that (if you're using an auto setting), and tries to keep the shutter open longer to let in more light to try to get some detail in the lower half of your picture. Consequently, it lets in TOO MUCH for the light areas of your shot, the sky, and you loose the color and detail. So, the trick is, point your camera just up at the sky, push the exposure button HALF WAY down, which locks in an exposure technique, then reframe your pic the way you want it and push the button down the rest of the way. There are lots of other ways to accomplish the same thing, of course, but i play around with that because its simple and sometimes it works out pretty cool.

Half-way measures would not have occurred to me, Heather!

It is a simple digital camera. The third that I've had but I never completed the learning curve on any. The technology seems like it is straight up anyway.

Elsewhere, I've become the person who always internally asks "why am I punching an ON button to turn a device OFF?"

Thank you for the ideas. I may show up on the nearby elementary school playground this evening. I've been wondering what the sunset looks like across the expanse of lawn :).

Well, I tried to do the half-click thing. I haven't figured it out. This is from the school playground. There were still 4 dedicated guys out there playing basketball. It was 100° at the nearest weather station yesterday afternoon. By the looks of their sweatsoaked shirts, they must have been there quite awhile and likely paid no attention to me when the camera flash went off ;):

Here is about an hour after sunrise in the garden this morning. The sun was trying awfully hard to break thru the clouds :):
