I have learned the hard way not all my bright ideas are bright. Yesterday I got locked out at work and had to clime in a window. A new door was put in, I had the old hardware reused. There is a deadbolt I use to lock door, the door handle is a simple knob with a button in the middle that you turn to lock. I lost the key to handle lock and never use it. Some how a client or myself must have turned button while opening door. Locksmith charge $125 to cut new key for lock, because I never use don't want to spend money. What I would like to do is glue button in unlock position, would this work? What kind of glue?

Why not have a spare key stashed in a place that only YOU know about? I know I lock myself out sometimes. the house. My truck. I keep spare keys. Way more affordable than calling a locksmith or breaking glass to gain access.

Gorilla glue is great but it expands and can look unsightly. And crazy glue is easy and neat. My Grandson locked me out with such a lock when he was 2. Good thing he could take directions and unlock it. I'm sure I did not even have a phone to call police if I had to. I guess I could have broken in-that would have been just what they would do.

You could either remove the deadbolt lock and cover the hole with a cover meant for that application or remove the bolt and replace the rest of the lock so it looks like it always did but cannot lock.

Oops, went back and reread. You do use the deadbolt, but not the doorknob lock. Remove the doorknob (two looooong screws) and remove the bolt from the side of the door. Replace the doorknob. Without the bolt, the door cannot be locked. You might want to fill the empty hole in the edge of the door with wood putty or a dowel.

If he can manage to get inside during the winter through a window, a secret entrance isn't necessary. I might worry about someone else using that window, however.

I locked myself out about 2 winters ago. It was VERY COLD out, too. Stepped out in the snow and ice to clear the dryer vent. (Not wearing a coat or shoes! ) Storm door lock flipped to lock position. No way to unlock from outside. Of course I did not have key to front door on me. Found a BIG chisel in garage and was able to pry door open at handle/lock. Kept that chisel where I could find in just in case! Also but large piece of tape over locking mechanism. Glad you got in. Hope the fix is easy.
