Getting any snow?

I throw sand down at work, used to use kitty litter but that makes more of a mess.

I use the wood ash where my horses walk to give them traction.

I use plain sand too. @catjac1975 , wood ash is a good idea for the horses area, and the shoveled trails I use to get to all the animal chores. Those trails get hard and slick!

With the unusual amounts of snow that we had last year I resorted to using the used stall bedding in the horse fields where it got icy. My husband snow blows trails out to the fields which get icy over time. The used bedding went on these trails to keep it from being dangerous. All of the grass die where I used it died.Does not seem possible that the manure laced bedding should have done anything except make exceptionally free grass. My only other thought was that the grass was exposed to extreme cold when the snow was no longer protecting it. But, grass does not die from the cold. So what happened to the grass?

Maybe the urine content of the used bedding burned the grass, being concentrated in a small area?

Could it have smothered the grass. I killed some by laying cardboard on top

I have thought of that. But it really was a sprinkling of material over a big swath. But that makes the most sense.

Also if it was a main path that the horses used a lot, all the traffic may have compacted the root zone enough to kill the grass.

My dogs have a path on the lawn about a foot from the flower bed that they have worn down to the dirt. If I am on the ball early enough in the spring while the grass is tender and the ground is saturated I can block their trail so the grass has a chance to fill in.

i've noticed too when i've done a mid winter coop cleaning & i decide to throw the stuff in my path to limit the slippery ice it will compact & slow down the weed & grass growth till i rake it away or till it into another area. my garden stays somewhat weed free early in the season but then it gets strangled with grass quickly if i don't keep on top of it.

We got a couple foot of snow yesterday and last night. Today the ski is blue and the sun out, but COLD!
