I am very lucky I live 20 minutes from my dad. I call my dad 2x times a week and take him to dinner every Sunday night. He will only go to one place that he used to go with my mom. Diner is clean has great food and cheap. Last night as I was sitting across from him listening to him rattle about that weeks senior center drama, some thing was off and I could not put my finger on it. When he started telling me about senior day at the casino it hit me. My father was wearing a bright purple turtleneck sweater. My father as always been a manly man he would never wear pink or purple to girlish for him. My father also has not bought new clothes in 20 years if not for Christmas and his Birthday he would be threadbare or nude. When I recovered from the shock I had to say something. I said that is a nice sweater where did you get it. He got a big smile and said you like it, it was your mothers. I almost fell out of the booth picturing my dad going though my moms closet looking for clothes. I almost made a joke about him turning into a drag queen but thought why ruin the night. I did take photo and tx it to my 2 sisters.

Glad you thought 2X. It's tough being old and by yourself. No one is to blame, it's just inevitable part of life. You raise kids to become independent. You want them to create their own life. He was wearing that in honor of your mom and better times.

It is probably comforting to wear something that was your Mom's. Or it was the only clean thing he had left.

Good for him. Although for life of me, can't figure out what a 50 year old would see in a 90 year old..... now as a friend, yes. Use to have a friend that was 30 older than me, loved his stories of his youth.

@Nyboy There will never be a dull moment with Dad from now on. ;) I knew it would be a good story when I saw the thread title. LOL (I also thought maybe a girlfriend gave it to him!)

I too thought there was someone new in his life. Perhaps he was feel nostalgic and the sweater brought him comfort. In either case, sounds like he was proud to wear it.
