Well, first of all, it isn't "shut up", it's "quiet". Slightly different meaning.

Secondly, people in English say "Please shut up" all the time. It's not all that polite but is considered more so than it would be without the please.

Sometimes just for a laugh I have thought about doing what is necessary to literally use "pipe down". However I have no idea where to get a set of bosun"s pipes. I assume they sell then at supply shops for maritime re-enactors, but again, I have no idea where those are.

(actually that word is hard to type. Since " bosun' " already has an apostrophe at the end shouldn't that mean the possessive should have TWO (or, in other words an end quote) but that looks weird. I suppose you could get around it by using the correct word instead of the truncated one, but for some reason "boatswain" just doesn't have the same ring.)
