We were branding cattle years ago and a Santa Gertrudis bull kicked, his hoof went between two pipes with barely clearance room for that hoof. It landed on my father in law's leg and nearly broke it.

Do they still brand animals ?
Yes... we branded all of our registered horses' registration numbers in code using freeze brands under their manes. The process uses irons that are placed in liquid nitrogen then pressed under the horses' neck under it's mane. The horse feels NO PAIN , not even a blink from an eye. First, the hair under the mane is cut very short, brand applied, then the skin is slighty scared and when the hair grows back, it comes in with white hairs showing the code number. We also did the genetic test to verify parentage for their unique genetic makeup in an event of recovery due to theft to identify them as well as ownership . :thumbsup

They still brand on the cattle ranch I used to work on. Spring round-up consists of bringing in the cow/calf pairs (they run about 800 head of cows) and roping each calf to bring it up to the fire. There the calves are branded, dehorned, tagged, vaccinated and castrated before being put in a holding pen. The mama cows come over by that fence and by the time we were done the herd would mostly sort itself out with the open and still pregnant cows on one side and pairs on the other. Those cows were kept in a closer pasture (or culled) until fall branding.
Electric branding irons are available but very expensive, they had one but mostly we used branding irons in the fire as the ranch ran three different brands and electricity was not always available.
I really miss working there...
