To answer the posted question though, yes.
I don't see it as a "norm" to let slide. He's your representative to the public and you hired him without it.
If he has such a good work ethic, than hopefully he can also understand that it's not a professional look.

IMO as a croquety old fart, he can wear what he wants on his own time. At work, get rid of the hardware and cover any obnoxious tats. Otherwise, find new employment. That would also go for female employees, plus keep body parts as well as hardware covered.

Question, women seem to love to show off their breasts, yet act insulted when someone looks? If you don’t want people looking, why not cover them? If you do want them to look, then stop the act and tell looker “thank you” for staring. Be consistent.

Seedcorn, I always question myself when I start agreeing with you, but oops, it happened again. I agree, especially if the guy didn't have the nose ring when he got the job. He represents your business, Nyboy. There is a grocery store here that hires quite a few young people. I see girls, particularly, wearing a bandaid above their eyebrow, I suppose to cover the hole in their head while at work. That works for me.
I don't know if anyone but me has noticed, but Gayle King, on the CBS morning news show, has a large tat on her upper arm. She wears makeup on it at work, to cover it up. I can't remember what the occasion was that she had it uncovered.....not a work event. But it was right there on the TV, as they say.
Now, as far as the low cut tops women wear, then get huffy if someone looks: I have no idea what is going through their minds. All I know is when I try to buy a new top, I have to look really hard to find one that has a suitably modest neckline. And one that is not see-through. Or so very thin that it looks like a paint coating. Ugh, don't get me started.

Anyway, I agree with the exposed body part/ stop staring comment Seed (OFC President) made.

My ex SIL is a case in point. I went to the gym with her once,(she spent a large part of her life there), and as we got into a workout she paused and took her baggy sweat shirt off. She was wearing a sports bra underneath.
"oh I just hate having to do this" she simpered.
"why'zat?"
"because the guys all stare at me!"
"I thought that was why you spent thousands getting the biggest set in the northern hemisphere? So what's the problem?"

You hired him without a nose ring. Then he shows up with one. The answer to your question, I will answer with a question.

How many of your clients come in wearing a nose ring?

My guess is none of them.

Explain to him the type of clientele that you have. Explain that what he does on his time is his own business, but that you ( use the word I ) have to keep up a professional image. You might even tell him that you personally have nothing against piercings, but since you see many of your clients in social settings, that you cannot even entertain the idea of body art.

Whatever you do, don't let him know that it gives you the creeps. Gently and politely tell him, with regrets, that you cannot allow him to wear his body art at work. Laugh and tell him that after work, he's rocking it with the nose ring.

Having employees is such a dance of broken rules and laws. Everyone has rights but the employer isn't included.

If you didn't already have a policy in place, you might have a problem. Singling one person out as the source/target of a policy in a workplace can be tricky.
Perhaps you could suggest something a little bit more subtle for during office hours?

When I was 16 my friend Denise pieced my ear she put in a small stud. When my father noticed it all hell broke lose, we fought for 3 days over it. At one point my father threaten to cut off my ear so I could not wear it. If I would have come home with a nose ring I been planted 6 feet under.
