Elderberries

I planted 2 in 2009 and I only have 2. One might be dead. I did not pick them this year and let the birds have them, but they are close to the garden. I did not even know they spread. I think the one that looks dead probably has some kind of shoot there and I guess I will find out next year. I have made the syrup to prevent flu and I use the juicer and have mixed the elderberry with blackberry for juice to drink. I also have jelly and some jelly that did not set and kept the syrup and can use for pancakes.
 
Hmmm you all are making me reconsider planting one . We are running out of places to plant! Wonder where can I fit one? And does it require two to pollinate and produce?
