BTW. Americans are sometimes said to have an Edinburgh accent by the British. I'm not sure what that means since checking online indicates that there is more than one English accent in Edinburgh.

yes, you are missing something. the US pronounciation is a bit more than i say it.

loss angelss only two syllables on the 2nd word even if i know it should be more properly enunciated as three.

it is ok. i'm just one of those sometimes lazy enough speakers that combine things together to make it easier to say quickly. in most contexts i would lose the middle vowel enough that you won't hear it, but if someone were asking me to slow down and enunciate then you'd hear all three. language can flex a little.

i mean, god bless ye now means goodbye, wonder what hello dolly would have to say for itself after a few hot toddies...

I have little idea how I talk. Well, I think that I do but with severe hearing loss, it's just a notion. Several funny stories can be related about that. One is me pronouncing the Mexican name of the place a ways south of that southern Cally town, and the little dog named for it: Chihuahua. DD has tried repeatedly to correct me. I can't understand what she says differently than what I do! Finally, I have resorted to "chi hua hua." Should be okay, right?

I thought that I was told at 15 that I had lost 30% of my hearing. A later audiologist said that I would have real trouble understanding language if that had been true. A decade later, I was still puzzled by what I thought that I was told.

Finally think that I figured it out. I was told that I had lost 30 decibels! Oh. Well there have been plenty more that have gone to the same place that those went off to.

Us southern folks are always told we pronounce things wrong. We feel differently about that....if you have a name or a town name that creates issues about pronunciation, it sounds like a personal problem and not ours to deal with. We live in America, folks and towns are free to change their names to avoid all that hassle. If not willing, then suck it up and let folks say it the best way they know how.
