128 days from frost to frost? Gheesh! We have around 8 months from frost to frost.

i only count on 110-120 days here, but some times it may go longer than that.

this morning i'm looking at some beautiful frost on all the trees and bushes, no wind at all, some fresh snow and a blue sky. we've not had a sunny day like this for a while.

MinnesotaGardening, I'm pleased that you are making such imaginative and such good use of what you are growing. And, that you have joined us on TEG.

One might think that a 323 day growing season would be plenty. That is WS information on Eureka on the northern California coast for 50% probability frost-free. Normals LINK

Growing season warmth is a whole nuther kettle of fish! I almost have tears in my eyes looking at this information: Growing Degree Days I knew people while I gardening there who wouldn't even attempt some warm-season crops.

Yea we do get warm in the summer. I don't know the terrain in that part of California, but I know that a lot of people in higher elevation areas struggle with many crops more than I do here.

That's an almanac average, but I don't put anything in the ground too early (except some brassicas). Everything else gets protected until I am sure it's not going to freeze again. I spend too much time growing from seed to stick my little plants out in unfavorable conditions.

Hello!

I garden in zone 4a. I have a veggie garden that is approx. 1/8 of an acre, as well as a few additional flower beds. My favorite things to grow are heirloom varieties of tomatoes, beans, and squash, as well as a variety of herbs. I also enjoy veggie oddities and unique plants. I am a sucker for sweet peppers - the kinds that roast down to be juicy and delicious! And I love growing plants that push the growing season here in central MN! Sometimes I am successful and sometimes I'm not, but that's part of the fun! I don't use pesticide/fungicides/herbicides as I like to know that the foods that I am growing are as natural and healthy as I can produce. I grow most of my plants from seed, and take pride in saving seed for future seasons. I am a big advocate of adapting seeds for your own garden conditions. Throughout and after the gardening season, I enjoy preserving the goodies that I have grown, and I can, ferment, dry, and freeze as many things as I have time to preserve. Because I have a short window between frosts, I also have an extensive indoor plant collection to keep some greenery in my life year-around.

My upcoming projects include landscaping several more flower areas around my house. I plan to focus on hardy decorative perennials and bulbs. This endeavor will be quite a learning experience for me! I'm excited to learn and share gardening tips and experience here. :)
Hello!! We have a lot of varieties of tomatoes here too... I hope you can provide me with some techniques for growing other variety of tomato... I wanna learn more...

That's nearly opposite. I spend 8 months bundled up.

i really like all four seasons, i like the variety, i like being able to take a break from gardening for a while, i like seeing a nice white blanket over the stuff i was supposed to get around to months ago but never made it, etc. nature is forgiving, in this case it is for giving me a break! :)

and beans. i love sorting beans. :)

Agreed. I was going to remove some stakes from my garden last fall but they are frozen in now, guess I'll have to wait til spring..lol And now I can enjoy the long-keeping foods, like squash (and yes, beans!) and the goodies I've preserved.
