Yes, it is very delicious and easy to grow! I had a large bed of it several years ago and lost it when I abandoned the garden for a few years. We dug up 2 very large clumps at my sister's yesterday, one of which was around 25 years old! It was difficult to move but we did it. Hoping to have...
Good luck with your potatoes and asparagus!! Planning on digging some asparagus roots at my sister's garden. Thinking if I get them out early, they might bear by spring. At least that's what I read at another gardening forum. It's been 10-15 years since I grew asparagus and gave up gardening...
Vfem, I also took a risk and planted by potatoes in the ground today. We really haven't had a "winter" with very mild temps...hoping for the best here in zone 7. Onion plants put in today as well. Good luck gardeners! Let the season begin :tools
Same here in N. Cen. Texas...we got nothing this year except extended drought - no significant rainfall since October 2010 - days, days and days of temps. over 100 and up to 113...Soil so hot and dry nothing could produce before it just died! Yes, it was simply 2011. Time to forget it and make...
Hello! Be sure not to let them grow to those "supermarket" sized ones...they are best when much smaller and very glossy. They can grow bitter very fast. You can salt the slices a few minutes until they "sweat", then rinse before cooking which improves the flavor. Enjoy!! :tools
Hottest, driest garden I remember for 30+ years! Tonight at 10:15 it was still 100 degrees and wind howling! We've been in triple digits near 110 for 2 weeks... If we didn't have our little well, it would never work...and it's only half working now...garden is wind-whipped and leaves curling...
Does anyone know why my tomatoes won't bloom? The plants are big and healthy looking - just no flowering. The cherry tomatoes are blooming and setting fruit, though....Our weather is HOT - most days 100+ now and NO RAIN to speak of for weeks...We water from our well so we do have abundant...
Thanks Hoodat! HOT and dry would fit the bill here! We've tried to rabbit proof the garden fence, but boy is it difficult! SweetMissDaisy - they are the dried ones from the grocery store....anxious to see how they do. My sister said she planted the ones from the grocery store, too. I've...
Is is just about the right time (maybe a little late?) to plant a few blackeyed peas? I didn't plant them earlier because of running out of room in the garden....I pulled out about 2 dozen onions that were ready for harvest and that left enough room for a few peas....went ahead and planted them...
They look delicious Trunkman.....so far, I've planted beans 3 times because we can't keep that pesky cottontail rabbit out of the garden! He keeps finding a hole in the fence somewhere...thinking the shotgun is the answer :tools
We are in Texas and have a lot of Harvester ants (BIG reds) which we don't bother because the horned toads love them (in fact the horned toads are making a come-back on our farm because we leave the Harvester ant beds alone. BUT there's a big bed behind the garden and they have a trail right...
Actually, you can prepare them for stir-fry....wash, dice, and boil for 3 minutes. Get them out of the boiling water quickly and into ice water. Drain really good and pack in freezer bags and freeze. Try them in a little olive oil and onions - cooking quickly - and serve with grated...
