I've done pine straw around various herbs and veggies and never had a problem with it. It's also around my roses, which don't seem to mind, except when it gets too thick (it falls naturally there), and then the stems stay a bit too wet. j

the beans grow up the corn, and the squash (and yes, pumpkins would be fine) grow along the ground. don't know about beans choking the corn... might be you need a faster maturing variety? no clue! j

Those are two of the three sisters... add some squash to the same area and you'll have all three - the beans fix nitrogen for the corn, the squash provides weed control for the other two, the corn gives the beans something to grow on and the corn and beans give the squash a bit of shade. plant...
