    What is it?

Kind of like the common thought that dandelions are weeds...it depends on who's viewing them, personally I love dandelions. :)

    How do you save seeds?

And when? We have rose of sharons, and some flowering vine thing that dad calls a hummingbird plant (think it's a honeysuckle?). Both of these have seed 'pods' on them. How do I save them, and when is the best time to do so?

Not sure if this is a harvest, a shrub, or a flower question....

My dad has a lot of rose of sharon bushes, and I was wondering when and how to collect the seeds? They have tons of pods on them, and I know many people like them. I want to save some to swap with :D

Volunteer Plant - Never seen them in our yard before. Growing fast

You can cover the heads with some nylon (or other breathable material). It won't hurt the flowers, and the birds won't be able to get the seeds :)

    Anyone ever used these?

http://henbogle.wordpress.com/2008/07/23/constructing-a-pvc-hoophouse-for-the-home-garden/ It's a 'hoop' hot house, similar to the PVC hoop chicken tractors shown on BYC. They look very easy to make! Where would I get the materials, like the cover and such? Would anything grow in the winter...

"FIRST BUILD YOUR GREENHOUSE"!!!!! Out of plastic bottles!

You could always try posting on craigslist, or hanging something at your local grocery or some-such. This is a wonderful idea! I would like to try this myself :)

    Trees...

Many nursery catalogs offer mini citrus trees, I have no idea where you could get the regular ones. But orange and lemon trees get very big, I personally would rather have the minis! You can use a half-whiskey barrel as a 'planter' for them, and even keep them in your house! You wouldn't need...

What is a good choice for a fast growing shade tree?

I forgot to mention the ones I liked in this group :) The yellow buckeye is very nice, does anyone know if the nuts are toxic to dogs? Or is it just humans? The sweetgum is also a nice-looking tree River Birch is on this list, but I don't know how well it would do here? Our weather is crazy...

What is a good choice for a fast growing shade tree?

Okay, I re-did the 'tree wizard' with almost everything checked, and only fast growers listed. Here's what it came up with: Pin Oak Northern Red Oak Thornless Honeylocust Tuliptree (yellow poplar) Weeping willow Carpathian english Walnut Quaking Aspen There were a few others, but they were...

What is a good choice for a fast growing shade tree?

Any size tree would be fine, we have 10 acres, and this area is in the center, but to the side, if that makes any sense? There is absolutely nothing over there, no wires or buildings. Only the horse pasture, the dogs (a bit farther away), and the woods that start the government preservation land...

What is a good choice for a fast growing shade tree?

Sorry, that's aggravating when that happens :( Okay, so the trees on the list are: Scarlet Oak Yellow Buckeye River Birch Paper Birch Baldcypress Red Maple London Planetree Littleleaf Linden Lacebark Elm Live Oak Hackberry American Sweetgum Silver Linden Willow Oak Sawtooth Oak Overcup Oak...

What is a good choice for a fast growing shade tree?

I looked at that list, thanks for that. I did a bit of searching, and read somewhere about the Arbor Day Foundation. Don't know why I hadn't thought of that before. Anyway, on their site, they have a 'tree wizard'. Basically, you input what you are looking for, growing conditions, height and...

    Lasagna gardening

The thing that attracts me most about lasagna gardening is the 'no weeding' factor. I was told that, if done correctly, a lasagna garden would be basically weed free.

What is a good choice for a fast growing shade tree?

I am going to be building some dog kennels, and we have a large area of our 'yard' that is unused. It is usually overgrown with ragweed and grass. This would be the perfect place to put these kennels, except for one problem....there is no shade whatsoever. I could use some shade cloth, but would...

    Anyone raise pomegranates?

I actually didn't ask, I just assumed since they had them, that they had grown them. All of their other seeds stated they were from their own plants. A friend of mine here in KY said they have one growing in their yard, so maybe they can tolerate it? It doesn't get that cold here, and when it...
