Well, as the title suggests i live in new jersey and i want to start my own garden next spring. My grandmother still gets around to garden and is pretty healthy but she only teaches me how to dig a hole, plant a young plant, water it, and put chemicals on it. I want to know where to start, how big to start, how to keep away bugs without chemicals, and how to improve the soil. Thanks :coolsun

Hi RB!
I'm in Jersey too. I don't know if I'll be any help because I just started gardening this year. I had some good luck with zucchini (who doesn't???) and garden peas. I also had a nice pepper crop. When I first asked the same question as you, I was told that pretty much anything can grow here (hence the name, Garden State)! I don't use chemicals at all on my property, but started two composts to rotate from year to year. Don't let all that good chicken poo go to waste! :D

Hi RB,
I am on the opposite coast and think you have already found a great site to questions, answers, and good sound advice. I would encourage you to find a local nursery/feed store, whatever is in your area selling plants, seeds, garden supplies, etc and establish a relationship for what grows in your area and what will be available next Spring.

I have been gardening for many years and learn new things every gardening season. I have learned a lot from this site so check out all the different topics. I would not start out too big for your first season as harvesting can be surprisingly overwhelming, and of course very satisfying, but, I don't know what too big might be for you.

Welcome, I bet your Grandmother is bursting with pride.
