knots

since my big surf fishing debut earlier this month. I'M curious...
too all the people who fish, .. i deviated from my usual knot and tried the trilene knot lost a few fish...

what is you're goto knot when you tie on your hook/terminal tackle.???????

Not knot related but just wanted to say that my son and husband went crabbing and caught 5 crabs, 3 dungeness and 2 rock crabs. Never tasted fresh caught crab like that before and it was delicious! No knots needed, haha.

i've meant to reply to this when you first asked it but i got distracted (Oh shiney!) and didn't get back to it.

not that it's all that much depth, but i use the basic fishing knot and if the fish are bigger and meaner i use heavier leader to prevent them from having too easy a time of it grabbing my lures.

i was going to look up the more formal name of the basic fishing knot and so i finally did and it is called a clinch knot:


looks like there are plenty of knots there to keep ya busy major...

Personally, I stick with the improved clinch knot most of the time. It's been pretty reliable for me when tying on hooks and terminal tackle. Give it a shot if you haven't already – might work.

I do! I'm not very good at it yet, but I'm practicing and getting better at it! My favorite fish to catch around here are the bottom fish called sand dabs. They are small, but so delicious! I did a little research on them and apparently they were (and maybe still are) served in fancy restaurants in San Francisco as a delicacy.

I love crabbing. We catch Dungees here all of the time in the late summer! 😋

I use a Berkeley Braid Knot.

@Dahlia and @majorcatfish , you made me look up the Berkeley Braid Knot.
It looks like it incorporates a series of quick release knots, then secured.
When I used to fill up my trucks to get hay, I would use long synthetic ropes and work them through the hay, then through the holes on the lips of the bed, then attach row 2 to row 1, row 3 to row 2, then, in my newer truck, row 4 to row 3.
Hay man would laugh at my efforts, seeing this as busy work. I made a lot of quick release knots so that none of the excess rope was hanging down, then do several overhand knots. time to unload I could un knot the ends, then simply pull and all the rest loosened up.
Now, my hay man drives my hay to ME and I see all of the hay/straw tied off, 4 rows, each secured to the next row down and bales tied to each other.
I started tying down the hay bc I made some trips of hay in the past, where I have had bales fall off.
For several years I drove to get my hay, unloaded/stacked all of it, until DH made me stop a few years ago.
I consider myself blessed than my loft can hold the 400 bales of hay and 50+ bales of straw. Many horse owners don't have a place to store. When you buy hay during the winter you pay a higher price.
On one such hay run, where I lost bales, I drove back and found that somebody else had picked up the bales that I lost and they were nowhere to be found. It was a dry year. The loss was MY fault.
Such is my momentary interest in knots, similar to my interest is learning all of the constellations I can see at night from my back yard.

I have no idea what it is called. Twist the hook 7+ times, place end through bottom loop, tighten & fish.

Until 4 years ago hadn’t fished in decades-literally. Went with younger guy who lives to fish. I acted like I didn’t know how to tie on, so he is doing that. Then when I caught a fish, I’d have him take it off the hook with some stupid excuse. I was good but the 3rd time he saw me grinning(laughing to myself). Then he understood and called me a name-not what my parents named me-& never touched my line again……
