    Potato flowers

The gardener has no need for the blossoms on a potato plant just like other root crops because the fruit is below the ground and not from the blossom like a tomato or pepper. For the gardener there is no real need for blossoms on; Potatoes, Carrots, Beets, Onions, Garlic, Lettuce, Cabbage, etc...

    Potato flowers

I cut all the blossoms off way before they have time to bloom. I was always told to keep the blossoms cut so that they don't steal energy from the plant. Chris

where to get half gallon or gallon canning jars??

The half and one gallon jars are only recommended for very high acid foods (Ball and the USDA recommends only grape or apple juice) and they also only recommend water bath canning. The only thing I use 1/2 an 1 gallon jars for is to store our goats milk in. One other thing I would highly HIGHLY...

    How do you water?

I hill my garden, hilling is like the older version of today's raised beds. When we water we use either 2 1/2 gallon sprinkling cans or about 200+ feet of garden hose with a pistol grip type hose nozzle and a water breaker threaded to it. IMO a hilled garden works better than a raised bed...

Why are my plants falling over?

Looks like too little light with too much heat. If you are using florescent shop lights you need to either have them very close to the plant which then you will have too much heat or what you can do it have 2 shop lights side by side and put 4 grow lights in them. Use the better ones that are...

    need help with grow lights!

When I used light to start seedlings I would use two 4 foot shop lights with two Agromax bulb in each light fixture. (Each bulb was 54 watts so that's a total of 216 watts) That put me at a little better than 2,800 foot candles at 6 inches above the plants (a little brighter than a typical...

Things I added to my compost today thread

You can compost meat and dead livestock, you just have to know how to do it correctly. For one and the most important, the average backyard compost pile doesn't get hot enough to compost meat or dead livestock correctly. When you are composting meat/ livestock the compost pile should have a...

    garlic question

What type of garlic are you growing, is it Hardnecks, Softnecks, or Elephant? If you are growing Elephant then there is a slight chance of getting a single bulb that is around the size of a baseball or better but if the garlic that you are growing is either Hard or Softnecks then you shouldn't...

Does Anyone have the book "Free Range Chicken Gardens"?

IMHO, The last thing you want to do is teach a chicken where the garden is at. One chicken can and will do more damage to a garden than a colony of rabbits. Chris

    Expensive trip to Tractor Supply

Most if not all Domesticated ducks carry Mallard DNA. In pure well bred/ pure stock there is a huge difference between Mallards and Rouens. Just like Malards, Wood Ducks can be bought from a breeder or hatchery (breeder being far better quality) so they could be called "domesticated". Chris

    Crop rotation question

thistle, I don't do much crop rotation so I may not help much but I will post this and it might help. In my years of gardening I found that crop rotation works best on a large scale garden/ field and that the average backyard garden benefits very little from it. A example of this would be if...

    Garden is now tilled.

Do you live on a State Park/ Forest? The reason you ask is because around here "Rangers" Park/ Forest Rangers have no jurisdiction outside the State Park/ Forest so when you talk about "Rangers" that makes me think you are on State Grounds. Chris
