Those crazy limas! My Violets' Speckled Mix plants are trying to regrow despite the fall weather. These would make a great perennial in a different climate.
Only 2 TYPES? :D
Root Vegetables (onions, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, etc.) and those that make seed pods (tomatoes, beans, dill, peppers, etc.).
Sorry celery and leeks. :(
Have seen next to nothing in my neighborhood. Most of the folks near me would be more likely to celebrate Day of the Dead or All Saints Day, not Halloween. Now Christmas is something almost everyone decorates for.
I missed the Takara Early adzuki beans. :barnie
Only planted about 8 or 9 seed. Left them to their own devices. Harvested most of the plants and dried them in a plastic grocery bag. Very easy to shell once dry, but the seeds are so tiny one wonders how the Japanese grow enough to make anko...
I thought that I should give a rundown of the seed I grew this year and what I thought.
Striped Hull Greasy Cutshort pole bean:
I didn't actually eat any of these. The size of the pods was disappointing so I decided to multiply my seed instead. On the other hand these were planted in a bed...
Hi @Bluejay77
I've been corresponding off and on with a Garden Web member who is a legume enthusiast. This year he coincidentally was also growing out seeds for Solwezi bean.
In his words: "The 16 Solwezi transplants I started (after pulling 2 plants early for disease symptoms) did well. The...
Where I live usually does alright when tropical storms come around, wet, but not completely wrecked. My late father did mention the time that a section of homes immediately north of Manassas were under water, but it was back in the 70's and they are in a floodplain. That storm did come up the...
You're welcome @Bluejay77
These were very, VERY, productive plants and I'm looking forward to growing out 1/2 row of each next year for eating. Now to plan for the hurricane.
Neat hoodat! I started a few pots in spring from roots I got from an ethnic grocery store, but the pots are small enough that any new roots won't be as big as the original ones. How hard are they to dig up in fall since they won't overwinter in zone seven?
With all the airplanes and helicopters overhead (Manassas has a municipal airport and planes line up along route 28 to go north to Dulles) I'd never notice a drone. However, if I did spot one over my yard I'd try to find the owner and give him some mugwort cuttings.
Well, it is smack in the middle of my vegetable garden (I have plans for the space in 2016) so mulch is not an option. I'll try digging it out and solarizing the likely root zone.
Don't get me started about Glechoma hederacea, aka ground ivy. At least I can manage that invasive.
I purchased seeds or mugwort in early 2014 and planted the 2 or three, sweet smelling plants, in my veggie garden. This year I had a huge bush to contend with. In doing further reading I've learned that many people have had horrible times eradicating this plant. Now what? :(
Piet Special #8 pole bean and Solwezi #64 pole bean are in the mail and should get back to you mid week Russ. Ultimately both produced a large enough amount of seed to send you double the requested amount and keep a lot to try growing for snaps next year. These beans survived a semi-flooded...
Mom works in the fabric industry and would agree that they set things out many months in advance of a given holiday to let crafters have time to purchase and make things such as Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving tablecloths, etc.
Solwezi Variant has finally produced mature seed. So far I have 15 seeds that reached complete maturity and 4 from a pod that I picked too soon. The mature ones are (to my eyes) pinkish grey, with a dark hilum and are a puffy ovoid shape. The immature ones are much lighter in color, but the...
