MY four haven't sprouted yet, though some have pushed partly out of the soilless mix. Those that have appear swollen compared to their original condition. Hope they begin to unfurl leaves soon.
Russ, the beans were waiting for me in the mailbox this evening. A wonderful end to a good day! I planted 3 Admire Snitbonen, 4 Piet Special (bush), 3 Mammoth Golden Cluster and 4 Solwezi 64 (pole). I thought it prudent to hold back 2 of the Piet and Solwezi in case this attempt fails badly...
I did some initial research today, looking into the beans from 2014 and 2015. There were links for 20, and I searched Wikipedia for the names of the other 7 or so (mountains, rivers, etc). A lot of them I haven't looked up yet. A few, not many, are very well known varieties. Most are carried by...
Hi Russ,
It just dawned on me that I picked four beans with not very exciting seed coats. Here's hoping for exciting pod color. :D
Also, once I get my longbeans growing I'll change my avatar. I'm thinking me holding a coil of the oh-so-delicious pods!

There are a lot of native flowering bulbs that could add color, and be suited to the rainfall in your area. Blazing star (liatris) was one my paternal grandmother loved. Camassia has the virtue of being attractive and also being edible, - theoretically. If I had my book on North American bulbs...
I picture you talking with a blond woman with bouffant hair, a bank of telephones along the back wall. Suddenly a phone begins to jingle . . . Special thanks to the volunteers from the College of William and Mary for manning our phones tonight. :)
Russ,
I tallied the 2015 beans last night and compared them to those in the 2014 Easy Bean Network. Sorry, analyst tic, nothing to worry about. :) However, I was unable to match 3 of them: Solw(v)ezi 63, 64, and Sweet White. There were 2 versions of a Solw(v)ezi bean on offer last year. So my...
I've always wondered if something shallow rooted like a strawberry would be permitted. It's not like the E.coli in our waste would come up through the roots into the plants and fruits, and the roots themselves are hardly competitive.
Marshall, I don't know CA law, but I did a quick search on tenancy in your state and this may help: Look up California Civil Code 1946.1 (b). There is a fair bit of detail, but basically, the property owner owes you a 30-60 day notice period if they will no longer rent to you. If you live on...
I did this in 2014 after bringing in a lot of compost to my garden. I cut a shoot off the parent lavendar plant, pulled off the lowest leaves, plunged the cut end into the compost next to momma, watered it and walked away. This could be a one off, but the plant looks happy and even survived this...
The Bloody Butcher corn results were not encouraging. None of the old seed showed the least inclination to sprout. On the other hand the new seed had 100% germination within 3 days so I can use that and have plenty left over. Hoping the genetic bottleneck will not be a problem.
This test was...
Like it says in the title. I tried growing Caucasian spinach last year, but started them in less than ideal conditions, without cold stratification, and didn't know what the seedlings looked like (so I may have plucked them out of the pot). :(
Naturally I waited till the snows began to melt...
