I really wish you could time the arrival of trees a bit better. It's always an "oh, now this" moment when you go outside at 4PM only to see a big ass bag that you know has 75 or 100 trees in it that you have to plant NOW. Glad I have a gravel bed :)
It'll be under 17" of manure and dirt. I do see what you're saying but ive had minimal issues with my other raised beds of similar height. I dont see the grass as much of an issue here as it is in my squash area where I just have chicken manure and straw down. There I see grass coming through...
Not so worried about that. I'll be dumping grass clippings around it all and mowing, as per usual.. The closer side is where we have a squash area. I'll be dumping compost and manure there as well.
My real motive here is to put a good layer of something that won't just wash out through the cracks and will breakdown over time to provide a really good bed for the strawerries. Once the roots take hold that will help hold the soil in better, but initially if I just filled it with soil I could...
I know I'm a little late to your game here but I bought one of these recently to test out and like what I've seen so far. My situation is finding something to put on both sides of my gravel bed (tree farm use) and then also to put into different spots for my garden. I wanted something that...
Last year (Nov) I spread A LOT of wildflower and short prairie grass seed between my tree rows because before our ownership it was cornfield & soybeans and thus had little in the way of a native grass seedbank. I'm hopeful that some of the seeds stayed put and weren't washed or blown away and I...
Getting closer to done. The plan is to pack the bottom and sides with horse manure, then covering that with soil, let it settle for a few days with watering, top with more soil and then plant seeds
Got the first set of cut branches in as the wall. I knew this was going to be a good amount of work to locate, cut and clean all the needed branches and make sure that they're straight enough to matter, but this is going to be a GOOD amount of work. Oof. However, I'm liking the product, so...
Well the problem was that he had 30 poplars that showed up when the ground was still frozen. It's just dumb luck that he lives next to someone that owns a gravel bed :). We have since got them in the ground
I wish I had a tractor. That sure would make some work go faster, but I REALLY love manual labor. Maybe after we get rid of some more debt.
Laid down for a few minutes yesterday with our youngest kid in a hammock. Then got back to work :)
The warmer weather is almost here to stay and like most of you I'm trying to get situated to hopefully have a successful year
Between my rows of soil I laid out horse manure last summer to suppress weeds and obviously give nutrition over time. Ober winter I spread chicken manure as well and...
Just got done laying out my jig I use for the pot placement, which is a super technical masonry line with tabs of tape on it and then a piece of wood with a line drawn on it for how far away from the string the center of the home should be. Now my flags are set for 75 more holes to auger out...
