What was your gardening experience, if any, as a child?

My mom did not garden so we did not.I do remember visiting my grandma in Hungary and going into her yard to pick breakfast and snacks. She had everything growing on her little plot.I want that for my yard. Again in Hungary I remember one summer helping relatives that had rented land and planted...

    Cottontail rabbits

My dogs found a nest of 5 babies last week right in the middle of my fenced yard. Eyes just starting to open. How long before I can shoo the babies out of my yard into the neighboring woods? I think the mum gets through the fence holes(chainlink) or crawls under my gate. They are VERY cute,but...

    Am I an Idiot?

Last year it took me weeks to dig out my driveway garden.I planted ground cherries and tomatillos and got a good crop. I see nothing wrong with planting well into the fall. You can get crops if you protect in frost.Only thing are the plants needing 100+ days of growing time. I did grow corn late...

How lucky you are! I am hoping the more I do the more others will, and eventually we will be sharing. I am already passing out eggs and seedlings.

    Cutting and/or killing tree roots

I took my neighbor some eggs and berries, and while chatting I mentioned the roots going under the driveway. She said it was OK for me to cut them. So I guess I will do that when I buy an axe. If we ever get around to a new drive I will see about barriers if they even help. I was digging on the...

    Slugs getting at Strawberries

Will a thick layer of straw be enough to deter the slugs getting at our strawberries? I thought animals were eating the berries so I put up a fence. Then I noticed the slugs the next day.I had put some straw out,but not the thick mat that was recommended. Will increasing the straw help,or just...

    Yay for Trading!

My mom noticed a sign by a person selling plants,so she stopped in to take a look around.Turns out they had some black bamboo they were selling for cheap. I have wanted bamboo for years.I love tall plants, and spreaders don't bother me. Well they got to talking and it turns out my mom has plants...

    Austrian Pine Seedlings Dying

About a month ago I got 9 AP seedlings.I think they are a year or 2 old.Got them from county soil and water bagged up with some water gel stuff. I started planting them around my yard and noticed that they are dying.Do these trees need very acidic soil? I put one in my old compost along with...

    Installing Sod (Save the sod!!!!)

She sounds very demanding. My brother is a handyman and very often he would complete a job and NOT get paid. If he does anything for her he should get cash up front, and detail in the bill what he is doing and what he is(not) responsible for. I would never pay up front for work, but then again...

Suggestions on what else to grow in my gardens...

I liked the ground cherries and tomatillos I grew last year. I did not use lovage much, but I like the plant/flower and smelling it. Zukes of any kind. Gourds are fun and some are edible. I am trying black corn this year for pop corn. I usually grow tall corn plants just to create some...

Tiny little trees...best chance for survival?

Yes,probably pot them. I loose a lot of tree seedlings by putting them directly into the ground, and then I do not tend to them as well as I should.

    Propagating willow tree...

I have corkscrew willow,so not sure if this will apply. I cut from the new growth, dip in rooting powder, and put in potting soil out of the sun. It dies back at first, but then quite often it will start greening up. I love willows!

What Does A Husband Do For His Sick Wife!

Oh I would love to have dh build that for me! I always joke with him that instead of the diamonds he bought me in the past (which ofcourse are very nice and I am thankful for) I told him I would be more than thrilled with a few yards of composted soil and mulch. That and a really good wheel...

    Cutting and/or killing tree roots

Sorry it took me so long to get a pic. Here is it: I have not touched it yet.I have to much else to plant. From the pic it does not look all that big,but was to big for my big shrub pruners(broke it trying). I will just hold off and maybe chop at it with a hand ax. I just don't want it to...
