I'm trying this for the first time in a frame that I built for raised bed but had not gotten filled. This will do that for me. I have made a couple of pictures and will put more on soon. So far, for the first week, I have just been watering the bales and I used blood meal instead of ammonium...
We have lots of squirrels in our yard, too. They mostly mess with stuff I plant in pots. That is really aggravating. Then they come back to steal my tomatoes. They really like tomatoes. I don't know a good way to get rid of them. My neighbor across the street got a permit and shot a lot of...
I'm a member of a CSA, Community Supported Agriculture. The organic farm is only a few miles away and it cost 25 dollars a week. You pay a month at a time. We get a share of what is grown so it changes with the seasons. It is supposed to be starting up in a couple of weeks and will go...
I have been doing square foot gardening for years. I am not quite as strict about it as Mel is, but have gotten lots of good information from the books and have used this intensive method to get the most out of my small garden area.
My husband and I have been talking about starting vermiculture to use for compost for the garden and for treats for the chickens. This looks like a really easy set up. I have the perfect place to put it. I will show it to him this evening.
smom,
It is going to get to hot for them to make it through the summer. You will have to plant again in the fall but those should make it through the winter into spring.
I think that is just wishful thinking on their part. You'd have to be crazy to do that. I never thought of canning as interior decorating. I'm sure there are a few people out there who would do that.
I've got the bamboo to make the teepee trellises, but what do I tie them together with at the top? The only thing I can think of is old pantyhose cut into lengths.
I'm planting English Peas this afternoon. I got some bamboo to make teepees and wrap with string so they can grow all around. I hope it does not get too cold here anymore. It is supposed to get below freezing one night this week but not very much below freezing. I'm sure the peas will be fine.
Don't worry. Gardening is a continuous learning process. Sounds like you are doing ok. Even with warm days things are not going to grow really fast in the winter because they don't have as much light. They will start slow and keep going. Make sure they get enough water and they will do...
I would use metal garbage cans and maybe wrap them in newspaper or put straw between the layers. That would keep them dark and dry and keep the mice out.
I have had to move off and leave 2 asparagus beds. We have one here that is about 4 years old. My husband does independent contracting and last year someone asked him about coming to work for them full time but we would have had to move. He told them he couldn't because I had planted an...
I think you can go ahead and move them now. I would trim them back because they will be stressed when you move them and that way they won't need so much water. One thing I read somewhere and I have done when planting or transplanting roses and that is put a handful of dry dog food in the...
These are actually scallions, not shallots. I have had good luck with them this year so far. MY Dad had them every year and saved the sets from year to year by pulling them up in the spring and laying them out in the sun to dry. Then keeping them in the barn in big brown paper bags till...
Use the clear plastic fiberglass or whatever it is made of sheets that people use for roofing for the sides. Make one side hinged at the top and then another sheet hinged at the shelf so that you can get in to mess with your plants. That sounds like a great idea.
I have two pear trees that have lots of pears on them considering their size. They look like they are very close to being ready to pick. I tried today and a couple came off in my hand. When I cut them they were still hard and not very sweet. How can you tell when they are ripe. Last year...
