We're always trying new varieties along side our 'standard fare' each year. It's always fun to see how something new does. And every now and then, we hit on a winner.
Last year we planted golden beets for the first time....fabulous!
We have 2 of bunching onions that do well for us...
Looks wonderful, and I enjoy making our own things, like yogurt for example. But I've just never been a tofu-kinda-person.
Anyway, just wanted to say it looks good and you've really outdone yourself this time, Steve.
That was interesting. Concerned to hear bumblebee populations are declining.
We have a lot of bumblebees - so many the trees "hum" with them when in bloom. Although I don't know what species they are. We've been very thankful for them. We have practically no honeybees.
Two things most likely to cause jars to end up short of liquid
- Incorrect Headspace - the "gap" between the top of the veggies/water and the top of the jar. It's important to use the right headspace for each product - 1/4", 1/2" or etc.
Headspace allows the jar to pressurize correctly based...
Yes, we do prefer those items canned. Corn is one veg that we prefer frozen over canned. So other than mixing it with other things, like in a soup, I never can it.
We do freeze some beans and peas - mostly butter beans, field peas or crowders and purple hulls. There are some recipes where I...
Really, a little practice and it gets quite easy. Plus, you will love the quality and convenience of your own pressure canned foods.
We've done it for so many years that I cannot imagine life without a pressure canner. We actually go to our root cellar to "shop". LOL....really, we carry a...
LOL....I admit I thought that too. :D
Last night, we cooked one of each, the same size. The blue one was just a bit drier. But if they had not been side by side on the plate, I would not have noticed.
Dickiebird, sweet potato slips are started from the actual potatoes. This 'tutorial' has...
After two solid days of steady rain (no actual hard storms here), we finished with 4 inches, followed by a nice sunny day yesterday. Everything is greener already! Thanks you, Lord!
Hope everyone else in need gets some soon.
Oh, a report....OK.....
We really liked them. I cut up white irish potatoes to the same size, coated all with olive oil, salt, pepper and rosemary. Then oven roasted them until browned.
The blue sweet ptoatoes were slightly coarser textured than a typical red sweet potato. They might be a...
Lesa, I slice them thin and then remove the peels.
ETA: I went back and added a comment to the recipe about the lemons. Also, I use the exact same recipe for Apple Preserves.
They're my favorite squash of all the summer varieities.
Plant in the spring, at the same time as you would yellow squash or zucchini. They have the same growth habits, same soil and water needs, and same disease or pest issues as the other types. If you can grow the others, you can grow patty...
DH purchased some blue sweet potatoes at one of the farmers markets we attend. Another vendor had them. She's going to bring us some of her tiny ones to save for seed potatoes for next season.
Here's a plate of them, peeled, cubed and ready to be roasted with last night's dinner. It's not...
I remember visiting my uncle in CA....about 20 yrs ago (he died young)....during the dry summer season. San Francisco, water was on ration. We saved bath water to water the plants around his little patio/yard and small water pond.
We made a day trip to the 'wine country', Sonoma County - or...
