We have surrounded our large garden w/chainlink fence to keep our Retriever/Chow mix from digging (& peeing) in our veggie garden. I have a small circle area that I am wanting to make my herb garden & my dog loves to dig in that area since the soil is loose & he can hide his bones.
It...
Wooo, what a great pic & info :D I may just go for it, I wanted to try vermicomposting cuz it seemed really cool. Great idea about the door...I'll have to keep my eye open for a city-trash bin. Thanks!
Check with your local County Health Department & see if they offer free lead testing. I work for ours and we do test houses, items, soil, etc all for free. I minored in Enviornmental Science and from what I can (vaguely) remember, lead does stay in the soil for quite awhile. Though, it sounds...
Me too! I have had a garden for years (very simple varities) & this is my first year w/chickens. I found this website after researching my chickies. You guys have inspired me to think outside th box of my usual gardening varities & to start a compost pile... Thanks!!!! :D
Well, we have lots of grass clippings and our neighbor even bags his, so maybe I'll trade him some clippings for some eggs ;)
Good idea about the chickens...I HATE mice and will be more than happy to see my girls have them as a treat
Right on, I was going to do the droppings board once my girls started roosting...I figured it would be an easier way of dealing w/the poo, now its going to help my compost pile as well :D I need to stop over-analyzing things & just do it!
Thanks for the great link! I have checked it out already & know what I'm going to do :D I have a large stack of leftover bricks and will just build the enclosure w/those. I love the fact I don't have to use cement. Waaay easy & free ;)
The tips on the Nitrogen levels are great. I'll...
This year I am making some changes around our house, first I acquired some chickens (they are almost 2wks old) and next I'm planning a compost pile. I luckily have a dh who goes along w/all my "tree-hugging" (the term everyone uses around me) ideas. :D
We live on approximately an acre of land...
I have dealt w/"those" types of ladybugs as well. When I was in college, they would just be all over our dorm room. There would be so many on our screens that it practically blocked out the sun! And they had that weird "ladybug" smell :P
Yeah, it didn't seem as though they would stick around...I have my chickies, so I think I'll just try with them, instead of spending more $$. Thanks so much for the input :D
Hmmm...I have chickens that I just purchased...I don't allow them to free range since I live in a neighborhood, but I was thinking of allowing a few of them to hang-out in my garden area a few hours a night. You don't think they're feces will burn my garden?
Thanks for all the info :D I may just do that and see what happens...like you said "oh well" if it doesn't work. Good to know about the garlic, yeah I heard that in passing last year and didn't know if it was true about the taste.
Sorry your garlic may be rotting, it HAS been an odd Winter...
Thanks for the warm welcome & the abundance of info! I may just go for it & order them ;)
Last year, I couldn't allow my ds to just eat tomatoes off the vine like he had in years past, cuz I had sprayed so much insecticide on my plants. I hated doing that & hopefully a more natural approach...
I am really wanting to grow my own garlic & shallots, but I have never done a cold-season crop...do I have to wait until the fall to plant or can I do it now? I live in Indiana and wasn't sure if with my weather, I should wait until fall. I have read a few things on different websites, but I...
Hello all! I am a newbie to this board, but discovered it thru the BYC board (my new babies are just 1wk old!) Anyways, I have had gardens thru the years and last year my garden was taken over by aphids. It was a complete infestation. I tried pesticides, spraying them w/the soap mixture and...
