I agree...I'm going to raise the plants some, most likely with rock. (I'm thinking thermal mass?)
I'm actually going to do both containers and in the dirt. 1/2 will be an area for a few cold weather veggies in the off season and the other 1/2 for "hardening" in containers.
The hole I dug did...
The box is burried about 8 inches and I don't want to raise it as that defeats the purpose of being in the ground for insulation purposes. The last all day rain we had put 4" of water in it! I'm thinking of puttting about 4 inches of rock before I put my dirt.
Not sure this is the right place for this post but hopefully I'll get some help. Anyway, I just built my first cold frame. It's 3' by 8' and made from treated lumber. I put it about 8" into the ground. Silly me didn't first measure my available windows but fortunately when I gone the angle done...
How do ya'll protect your gardens from free-ranging chickens? I need a cost effective way to do it now b/c they are already making a mess of it and there's nothing planted yet!:barnie Help
I couldn't wait either. I have cabbage, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, eggplant and various perennial flowers already started and some coming up! Here's photos of the shelves I built for sprouting.
I mostly use "Jiffy Pellets" in a mini greenhouse but yes, I do use plastic wrap too. I don't have any trouble sprouting....just afterwards under the light. I'm thinking now that my lights are too far above the plants and I'm going to work on that today.
Thanks everyone! I've been outside today for the first time in days. We've had rain rain rain. I got (4) 4x4 beds ready. I think I'll direct sow the cabbage in a week or so and maybe put out the few plants that aren't "leggy". Last year I put store bought broc cabbage and cauli plants in at the...
I am in zone 7 and we've had a very mild winter so the will be able to get outside fairly soon. I'm building a cold frame but haven't got it done yet. It keeps raining every time I have a chance to work on it!:he
I'm thinking maybe I need to go ahead and sprout some more cabbage in case those...
Here's a photo of my red cabbage seed that I sprouted 2 weeks ago. I'm new to doing everything from seed and was wondering if these look too "leggy" and do I need to start over???
Last year I had some problems with planting two kinds of tomatoes in the same raised bed. I planted 4 Romas and 4 Grapette's, which used the same verticle support. When it was time to harvest, all I had on all 8 plants was bigger than usual grape tomatoes:barnie
Is this normal?
Should I put...
I have almost of all of mine gathered/purchased. ALMOST 70 DIFFERENT VEGGIES AND HERBS. I must be nuts! I have started a few of the cold weather stuff inside and am chomping at the bit to do more! I'm new to doing everything by seed and have always just bought what the market brings our way as...
OK after reading all this I'm concerned. I only bought heirloom seed this year. Nine varieties of tomato. If they are so hard to grow maybe I should plant some hybrids as a back up?????
I'm starting everything from seed this year and was wondering if anyone knows about when the last killing frost would be in my area? I'm near Stuart, VA, right on the NC line. I took a guess and I have a few things sprouting inside but I need to do some calculating to see if there are others I...
Nice Job! You are going to love doing raised beds. I made (15) 4'x4' and 3 or 4 odd size ones last year. Your garden is looking a lot like mine. One other thing I added was landscape fabric under it all. All the lumber free and this year I have free mulch to add to the walkways. I...
