    Lavender for essential oil

I admire your spirit of adventure in growing and distilling lavender oil! I keep adding Lavender plants that I get on sale to form a short hedge border around my herb garden. They seem to be mostly Hidcote varieties. I have one Provence lavender. All my lavender is heavily pruned following...

How Did You Get Your Login Name?

Name of my Silver Laced Wyandotte, which ended up being the nastiest chicken I have ever owned! She seemed so sweet as a chick. Anyhow, when choosing names I saw a french lady on tv with the name and it sounded like silver so I used it for her and my login name. I use it for 3 of the 4 forums...

who is a Master Gardener? I am going to do it... how about you?

I called to sign up last October and the class for March 2010 was already filled before the announcement. The next class is in 2012 which won't do me much good because from what I've read the world is ending that December. I thought the fees were surprisingly high for training for a...

    Elderberry Bushes

I have had some elderberry wine made by a fruit winery in Ohio that was fantastic tasting. I can see Elderberry as a fruit juice for colds. I think a combination of fruit juices, like elderberry, blackberry, blueberry, cherry and what ever else you have would provide all the fruit anthocyanins...

    Yellow Split Pea Seed Source?

I love yellow split peas for many recipes and wondered if anyone has a source for seeds? Bright orange yellow like the commercial grocery split peas are what I am seeking. I bought every yellow split pea offered in Seedsaver's membership catalog and none were yellow. I wasn't pleased about...

    Keeping Weight Off

Eating all you want and exercising works well only in the beginning. Then the body adapts to this, leaving you with the choice of cutting back on food consumed or beginning over-exercising. I was an over exerciser until I began getting injuries and then I had to face the music and cut the...

    When to pick chinese chestnuts?

You are probably right. I am at the edge of a large track of woods by a river. I won't have a chance at those chestnuts now that they know about the tree. Want some nice prickly empty burrs?

    When to pick chinese chestnuts?

Well, it can't be the same squirrel unless you find my chestnuts in there! It carries them off burrs and all! I have found empty burrs hundreds of feet away in the woods. :P

    When to pick chinese chestnuts?

I have a chinese chestnut full of large green burrs. Last year the squirrels made off with most of my nuts. Can I pick the green burrs to beat the squirrels? I'm probably 2 or so weeks from the burrs falling to the ground.

    I Think it's a Maple

Sycamore. The bark of the tree comes off in irregular layers as the tree's defense against climbing vines like poison ivy or English ivy.

    Do they still make this?

You can make these fairly cheaply with the 6" square holed mesh used for concrete and a roll of plastic. I priced a 50' roll of the wire mesh for $50. It's about 3' high. Our plant nurseries make and use them for tunnels.

First light frost of the year!

We didn't get below50 last night, so no frost! I don't have any tender plants that I am concerned about- the drought did a number on most of the garden at this point.
