I just saw this about a lady who photographed her garden and was astonished to find a fairy like image. Make of it what you will:

The one on the left looks more like a Chantenay carrot.
If you like the nearly 3" at the shoulder carrot, plant Chantenay next year. That is all I grow because I have clay and shale soil and I also store them for winter. I get 3-4"shoulder and 7-8" long. Verrry sweet!
I get my seed from the...
I'd definitely ID it before consuming it, even if it tastes sweet.
Have you looked it up in reference books. You can start with the leaf key or the fruit key. If you happened to observe the flower that would be more useful in IDing.
Here's one that might be it, brush cherry...
Lindens are a gorgeous and useful tree.
I dry the flowers for teas and the seeds for Christmas holly berries arrangements. I know its relative in Europe is the lime wood so highly valued for carving. I'd like to try our Lindens, being a woodcarver myself.
It doesn't strike me as a particularly...
I planted it one year and was pleased to see that it reseeded itself for years after. A very intriguing taste sensation when eating a leaf while weeding. It seems to have run it's course or other weeds crowded it out, lol. I miss running across it unexpectedly.
I have a good crop of Mayapples this year but have never harvested them before. Is it best to wait for a frost, do I need to beat the squirrels to them? If I pick greenish will they ripen? Are they even worth the effort?
Great on your first bloom!
Bad news- I have a pond full of them that I have been trying to eradicate for the last 3 years. See my thread under Weeds/Problems Ridding Emergent Vegetation in Pond, for my torment.
My sister had an aquatic nursery where I got some hardy water lilies. She assured me...
I found some plants at a fairy festival. I grow in a large pot outdoors in zone 5. In late fall I cut it all off and place in jars of water. It roots fairly fast (I think it is in the mint family with the square stems) and then have many to plant in spring. I also give as gifts. It is a novelty...
It took several spaced applications, but over half the waterlilies are gone and the Phragmites is beginning to yellow. The area that I was able to hit with the spray stunted first at 3-4' and those that I didn't hit are 10 to 12'! It will take more than this year to get rid of that stuff.
My...
I don't use Miracle Gro on most of the vegetables. Greens and cabbage, yes. Makes my plants too leafy.
I use a 5-20-20 for tomatoes, potatoes, carrots and peppers; wishing the last two numbers were even higher. I bought some tomato food but was amazed to see such a high nitrogen first number...
I started lettuce and radishes in late September a few times. One time I was lucky to have extremely mild weather to the end of December and had holiday salads that amazed everyone.
The other years that was too late and I got nothing. Due to all the hard work with no return, unless lucky, I...
I belonged to Seedsavers for years. The catalog is mammoth! They have their non member catalog that you can order from, too. Their philosophy is to not duplicate what members are selling in the public catalogs.
You can find just about anything from most countries. There is a yearly fee and if...
I observe the more natural rhythm holidays like the solstices.
I have watched the sun rise in years past, but this morning's was very overcast.
I like to meditate about what it is supposed to be about, why the ancients made such an effort to note it. Trying to go beyond archaeo-astronomical...
I am so impressed with the displays! Especially that the the flower stalk doesn't need to be staked.
We have problems with Foxgloves behaving more like biennials instead of perennials, being so short lived. The Digitalis obscura is a better choice for our area, will grow in sand and more dry...
I found honey melon sage to make vinegar.
I planted what I thought was honey melon sage last year, but it was a mislabeled pineapple sage. I use the pineapple for tea blends so it sure didn't go to waste.
When I smelled this plant it was distinctive from the pineapple, and will make a heavenly...
I have the best smelling plant called Costmary or Bible Leaf.
Aside from the obvious use as a fragrant bible page marker, has anyone found uses for this herb?
I am in the process of drying herbs in the dehydrator and will include this if it excels at something other than as a garnish.
Check out my thread called "Herb and Garden Mysteries" (do a search, I can't link) where we discussed these books and more!
I get the books on CD or tape and weed while listening. They are fantastic! :)
