    most unusual produce

Thanks for the info. I did attempt to hand pollinate with a little brush and I throw the dead mice from snap traps in our shed into that area but no luck. I think you are right about another variety needed and that these may be un-named.

what do you wish, in your wildest dreams, you could grow?

Mine are the prickly thistle looking globe artichokes. I do grow Jerusalem artichokes but I assumed the question was about globes. I grow green and red and they get as big as those in the grocery from California. The reds are smaller but I love baby artichokes so I'm fine with smaller, too.

what do you wish, in your wildest dreams, you could grow?

I am able to grow artichokes. I mulch well in winter and pull it away when I see new growth from under the mulch. I am zone 5, but we have had some winters that are like 4.

what do you wish, in your wildest dreams, you could grow?

Anything prehistoric, I'd like to be overwhelmed by really large plants that I could spend the rest of my life identifying. Oranges and grapefruits. I know estates around here used to Orangeries but the heat bill would be astronomical these days.

Needed sugestions for climbing edible plant

Raspberries and blackberries are bushes not really climbers but you could tie off longer blackberry canes to the pergola. You can espalier apples and I don't see why running them up, over, into the pergola wouldn't work on the south side anyhow. Have you looked into Scarlet Runner Beans or...

Cherry/grape tomatoes, can I pull seeds from storebought ones?

You might get lucky, go ahead and plant it and see what happens. Cherry tomatoes will reseed in the garden and become a nuisance so I think you will get satisfactory productive plants. When people save seeds from tomatoes they let a tomato go pretty rotten in a bowl then rinse the seed from the...

    Lingonberries?

kellygirll- It likes a moist soil in partial shade. It is grown as a ground cover so perhaps under a shrub or tree with dappled shade that has the same neutral to acidic soil requirements? Another site would be where it receives morning sun, not the intense afternoon sun. In the wild it grows in...

    most unusual produce

I have a wild grove of Pawpaws that are 23 years old and nothing!!! Only the flowers, so I assume from reading these posts that I need a cross pollinator. I didn't plant these so I have no idea what variety they are. I have noticed that there are many plants on my lot that you could get from one...

    Lingonberries?

I don't have any low bush blueberries but that may change this year! I haven't eaten one that I know about. In jam who would know the difference? I did plant Wintergreen last year, more for the leaves than the berries. I have always loved happening upon those leaves in the wild. What a taste! :)

    Lingonberries?

A lot of the better nurseries guarantee the plants and will replace or credit your account. I would contact them about that. It doesn't sound like it was viable when it was sent. I work at a large perennial nursery and we look for well rooted plants to fill orders. No Lingonberries, sigh.

    Lingonberries?

I'll give that link a try, thanks. I'm supposedly in zone 5 here on Lake Erie but we actually range between 4 and 6, depending on the weather. I love the low bush blueberries, especially the vibrant red display in fall. My high bush aren't as spectacular.

    Lingonberries?

I would like to plant Lingonberries but know so little about them. I have a cistern with 12" deep soil covering and would like to plant them over that but concerned that 12" wouldn't be enough. If they naturally grow in rocky thin soil then this would work. Also do they need as acidic soil as...

    Herbs in vinegar or oil?

Let me ask this in a different way. Would you buy a vinegar with herbs in it or an oil with herbs in it?

    Bog Garden

Cranberries, pitcher plants, some ferns. Some ostrich ferns I saw were planted on top of a heaped mound of peat moss(looks like an ant hill) in the bog. That was cool looking. I have a bog but haven't altered it's natural state. The predominate plant is sensitive fern which likes wet roots...

Buttercups. I have them. Low, creeping and persistent. I work at a perennial nursery and those are buttercups.

    Herbs in vinegar or oil?

I want to make an herb vinaigrette but I have read recipes calling for the herbs to be added to the vinegar first and others say to add to the oil first. Both must be steeped for hours to allow the herbs to impart their flavor and fragrance. I want to try this with the honey melon sage but I...
