LOL Yup, but I'm right on the line between 5A and 5B. We had really late frosts here this winter. Well, more than frosts, really. We had weather going down into the mid 20s on my lettuce. It grew right through it. I didn't cover it or anything. I have been weeding like crazy. Can't keep...
'cause I've been out grazing in the garden like a bunny all weekend.
My cress is beautiful. I grew two types of it this year. The pepper cress sure is spicy! I've also been picking radish leaves and eating them before walking away, plus a few lettuce leaves here and there. Yummy! I'll admit...
LOL I thought of potatoes. However, potatoes are a low cost food for me to buy. Since my garden and yard isn't very big, I've been focusing on higher cost items. So, no potatoes and carrots are limited, too. I do plant onions because there is something about fresh onions that can't be...
Tonight, got the six blueberry in & the two currants. Also, planted the two Carmine Jewel Cherry. I'm going to need tomato cages. Most of my tomato cages are protecting my new plantings, so that we don't run into them by accident!
Tomorrow, I'll plant that gooseberry.
Still waiting for my...
Thanks.
I went to an event today where an organic grower had nursery stock. I caved and bought one more gooseberry. I know I can fit that in. The hard part will be fitting in the two fig trees. I'll manage, even if they go in the FRONT yard. I have yet to touch my front yard, mwahahaha...
Thanks, it's been a hard night. I actually really needed that...
You never know how even a little Internet icon can mean something to someone sometimes...
Pictures to come, eventually, I promise. My husband was diagnosed with an intermediate stage cancer at the end of January, so we've had a lot of chaos lately. I've been working, getting all this in the ground, and dealing with surgeries + cancer stuff. It's been a rough spell. We're know...
My Carmine Jewels came today, along with my Cayuga Grape. The Carmine Jewel cherries are pretty small, but I expected that. They are NOT dormant and are really pretty! I about fell over when I saw the grape. It's over 3 foot tall and out of dormancy. Compared to the crap grapes I planted...
My lowbush blueberries and currants arrived today from Jungs. They look wonderful -- green and budding out. I talked to them earlier and my lilac is delayed.
I talked to Gurneys today, and my Cayuga grape & my Carmine Jewel Cherries are supposed to ship tomorrow.
I haven't called Henry...
You can, but your garden plants can't send down deep roots if you do. This might not matter if you are growing only shallow rooted crops and have a deep raised bed. It will matter for plants like tomatoes that can send roots much deeper.
We dig the sod out. It's labor intensive...
I didn't have enough small containers here this year, so I bought Dixie cups (the big ones) on sale for 99 cents for 20 cups. I prefer to use my recycled containers, but didn't have enough that were tall enough.
I put a drill bit in the Dremel and drilled five holes in each cup. A dremel can...
I was in a Walmart this weekend that was selling big pots with 3 pepper plants or one big tomato plant...$10. These had tiny little trellises that were a joke for the tomatoes and unneeded for the peppers. The tomatoes were so big they had little tomatoes on them already.
Single plants were...
No, I just ordered them this week. My Carmine Jewels have been ordered for a long time, but I have not received them from Gurney's yet. Hearing that you got yours means mine might arrive soon. It's definitely time to plant them here soon! I'm also waiting on a Cayuga Grape from Gurneys.
I...
I'm planting mine closer together than one normally would to form more of a hedge. Since I'm limited in space, it's my only option. I've seen some sites that have said to use one distance for home production, to ease picking, but to plant close together for commercial production if automated...
Adding: I'll post some pictures, but I want to get some nicer ones first. I'm still planting / cleaning up. I'll wait until the man traps are gone from my back yard. (We have holes dug for some things we are waiting on.)
Thanks! I decided to get things into the ground before the economy gets even worse. Prices are only going to keep going up, I'm afraid.
Henry Fields had a $25 coupon and you could use it on a $25 order. So, I got the Goji's with that. Jungs or Gurneys had a Web special. The currants were...
My tomato cages are all from yard sales so have the traditional wires to stick them in the ground.
However, I have a bunch of other wire cages protecting my small fruits. They are pretty much tomato cages with smaller openings so my puppy can't stick his nose in and 1) chew the plant or 2)...
In case anyone is following my progress this year:
I ordered 2 Gogi berries, a lilac, 6 lowbush cranberry, 2 red currants, and 3 hybrid hazelnuts (from Arbor Foundation). It's going to be tight, but I can squeeze all of that in. (I'm going to crowd the hazelnuts a bit probably.)
In other...
