I'm putting together a list of California winter wild edibles to order. I'd like to get my order in very soon, so I can hopefully start planting these winter wild edibles by early January. I'm in Growing Zone #8, very close (about three miles) to Growing Zone #14.
This is what I have so far...
I just cooked up a pot of Stinging Nettles today! Used the juice for tea. It was pretty good. I drank about 1/2 cup, with some honey, then mixed in some Blackberry tea and more Stinging Nettle juice.
I'll eat the greens tomorrow with rice and other veggies.
I need help identifying these plants I found in my back yard! I'm hoping that some of them are edible. This first one, I think is Stinging Nettle. I'm looking forward to cooking up Stinging Nettle ...
Hey Jordan ... !!! Nice to see you here. My green onions are starting to grow flower buds. Haven't opened yet. I like to let some of my plants grow flowers, especially carrots ... !!!
I think I'll collect some green onion seeds this year, if the birds don't get to them first.
My favorite place in the Mother Lode is Columbia! My boys and I enjoy visiting the Falloon Hotel. They have some interesting and delicious ice-cream flavors. One of my favorites is blueberry cheesecake ice-cream!!!
We also like to climb the rocks. Someday I want to ride the stagecoach.
We plan...
That's odd ..... Maybe you got a bad batch of seeds ... ???
I've always had very good success with kale. Last year I had poor success with planting tomato seeds. I think they soil (in small containers) dried out. I've never planted cosmos from seed. Planted a bunch of cosmos plants last year...
Looks like you must utilize every square foot/inch that you can! I have most of my plants packed in very close. I've planted this way for years, due to lack of space.
So far, everything is growing just fine. I'm concerned about worms .... In the past I've had problems with worms on tomatoes...
You have cilantro growing in the snow! I knew that it grew well in the cold, but I never imagined it was that hardy!
I've made several plantings of cilantro. I'm not sure just how it will do when the weather gets very warm .... We have already seen several days in April in the 80s, and will...

New Problem: There are rabbits running around the neighborhood! And they have been destroying my garden!
One of my neighbors helped me put a fence around my winter vegetable garden. Hopefully that will keep out the rabbits ....
Actually, I've never started anything inside! Last year I planted some seeds my dad gave me in left over six-packs from the nursery (outside). Less than half the seeds matured into plants that produced fruit (tomatoes and peppers). I think I started the seeds too late though. It was around the...
This is somewhat ironic .... Today, the 8th of February, I planted my first winter vegetables at our new place, here in the little obscure town of Ceres ....
-- Spinach (Bloomsdale)
-- turnips (Purple top)
-- Swiss chard (large ribbed)
-- Swiss chard (Ford hook)
-- Mustard green (Southern...
Jordan -- How long have you been gardening in Ceres? What is the coldest you've seen in Ceres? I was reading in the New Western Garden Book and it says that the record lows are 13 F! Will any winter vegetables survive temperatures that low?
Wow! What a small world!!! I've been gardening for many years. Started gardening in Oregon, then Washington. I've been growing plants in Modesto for around 20 years.
I just bought a bunch of green onions at Cost Less. I'm going to cut off the greens (use them in salad or soup), and plant the...
Does anyone else grow winter vegetables in Zone 8? Near where I am located? We just moved to Ceres, California (between Modesto and Turlock, which is about half way between Sacramento and Fresno), at the northern tip of Zone 8, near the southern tip of Zone 14, where we used to live.
I want to...
