    Look! I have artichokes!

I really just wanted to show someone before I had to cut their lovely heads off. This is my first time growing artichokes... I never thought I could. I thought you had to be in a more coastal climate, but apparently not. My tractor scarecrow has been diligently watching over my garden. :D The...

2011 TEG Giant Pumpkin Contest - JOIN US BY AUGUST 1ST!!

Superchemicalgirl- I'm in Fresno, CA. We've already had a couple of triple degree heat days and then it rained last night!? Vfem- That's where that pumpkin vine wanted to go... it's a mammoth dill/black anise/fennel/white sage patch. I know you're not supposed to grow fennel near anything...

2011 TEG Giant Pumpkin Contest - JOIN US BY AUGUST 1ST!!

Oh, I want to try! I know I won't win, but it sounds like a lot of fun! This will be the 4th year I'm growing pumpkins, but I'm not that great. The first year I grew them I tried to grow like 100 of them because I wanted to have my own pumpkin patch for Halloween and sell them. I bought 4...

down to the last of the radish

What do you do with your kohlrabi? I debated planting some this year, but I had no idea how to prepare them or what they would be good with. I think they are actually pretty neat looking... which is why I thought about growing some.:)

    I'm skeered of spider (mites)!

A spray based on neem oil? I have had some huge battles with spider mites these past few summers. The dishsoap seems to work- but as you noted, not on everything. This year I've been using a lot of neem based sprays on things and have noticed it's a lot gentler than the soap. Just a thought...?

What kind of hot pepper is this?

That's a Hungarian Yellow wax pepper. I have 5 of it's twins in my back yard right now. Give it 2 more weeks and they will be yellow. As long as you didn't plant any Fresno Chilis (which when young and green look similar) I'd bet the barn on it. Pickle those little guys once they turn yellow. :D

    Growing grapes??

Hi, I'm here in Fresno- the raisin capital- and I just wanted to agree with the set up ridgerunner showed you. That's what everyone here pretty much uses if they have a choice. Unfortunately, someone started our grapes all along a wooden fence before we ever lived here... and now the fence is...

Dracaena and Dracaena. But which is which?

Maybe I'm wrong... but it looks like the large leafed one is Dracaena Aletriformis. I recently bought some seeds to try to grow some and it looks a lot like the pictures I researched. I would agree with other one being Marginata. I've only been growing different types of Dracaena for a short...

What can you tell me about garbanzo beans (chick peas)?

Thanks... I thought that one of my plants died when it started to turn brown... it had about 5 peas per pod and there were about 5 pods on the plant. I stupidly pulled and tossed it. Then 2 more plants started to follow suit and I realized that I was probably making a mistake. I was growing...

What can you tell me about garbanzo beans (chick peas)?

This is the first time I am attempting garbanzo beans this year... the info I've found is kind of sketchy on when they are ready for harvest, how to harvest them, etc... Any advice would be appreciated! :) I'm under the impression that the plants start to dry up as they near being able to be...

    need id please

I'm still undecided but its twin lives in the plant identification thread from 5/4/11. If you look up that thread from noobiechickenlady it will give you some possible suspects.:)

    Why do you garden?

I garden so that I can make gazpacho. I garden so that I can surprise people with the unexpected... I recently purchased Joshua Tree seeds and I told my husband that my dream was to have someone walking by our house and exclaim "Did I just walk by a #$%& Joshua tree?!" I garden because it helps...

I kill roses! Someone stop me please...

Thanks... I called my mother and she said about the same. I think I tend to smother some plants with too much care. She was always really good with the stuff you leave alone... jades, roses, lilacs, etc... But I will go ahead and cut the spent blooms. Incidentally, which specific types of...

    Plant ID Please?

Does it get a little green head at the top that looks like it should flower in the summer, but never does? It kind of looks like common pineapple weed (sometimes it gets big like that at my house). Pineapple weed is also sometimes called wild chamomile and it will grow pretty much anywhere...

I kill roses! Someone stop me please...

Vacant lots can grow better roses than I can. My intuition is off when it comes to these things, and I keep killing them.:( I just bought 2 more from a nursery and transplanted them into my yard. Their blooms have mostly died down now. Do I cut them off or just let them hang there like sad...

Do you have walking paths in your garden? Help me!!!

I tried to do what you did, hoodat, in my front garden... but could never find enough rocks. I really like that idea. I ended up crowding what I could up and filling the rest in with iceplant to make the illusion. But I love that look. Anyways, I was also going to suggest paving stones (if...

Do you have walking paths in your garden? Help me!!!

Oh my gosh, thanks everyone!:D I don't personally know anyone who has any vegetable gardens here, so I'm kind of making up what I'm doing as I go along... all the garden layouts I've seen in books were really hard for me to understand. I know that it's more politically correct and in right now...

Do you have walking paths in your garden? Help me!!!

Ok, so I've gone a little path crazy... but maybe what I've done will give you some ideas. My husband and I were talking about this yesterday. Paths may not be the most economical way to plan out your garden, but nothing beats being able to walk around on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee...

Need help finding a culprit or can it be ants ?

I've tried soap and water and neem spray on them to no avail. Currently I'm using Corry's insect killer sprinkled about and then I'm wetting the ground (it says it lasts through rainfall.) I hate using regular pesticides, but I have so many I can't think what else to do. I've read that they...
