I got my info on the straw bales for the extension office in AZ then did a little research on my own. What those people say is that you can get 2 years out of a bale however I am thinking possibly 3. I have horrid red clay soil so I figured if nothing else I could till all the straw under and...
Well maybe I had better wait till fall then cause the bermuda is everywhere. Once monsoons hit down here it is hard to keep up with the weeds and bermuda but I dont want to kill the corn.
All the turnip talk yesterday made me hungry so I went out last night and pulled a few for supper.
I boiled them until tender. Then scooped out the insides kinda like ya do for twice baked taters. mash the filling add a little salt pepper grated cheese and a few crumbled crackers. fill the...
In the bales I have yellow squash, zucchini, green beans, english peas, blackeye peas, tomato's, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli.
But I also have lettuce, radish, turnips, corn, pumpkins, watermelon, cantalope, strawberries, raspberries, beets, cucumbers and I am sure I have missed something...
On another thread I posted a pic of my straw bales and a few folks had a question or two so I figured it needed a thread of its own.
I live in southern Arizona so water is always an issue. When I started gardening about 4 years ago I fell in love with square foot.
Except for the fact that it...
Never used them for a hedge and we typically pull up any we find since they are poisenous to livestock and we have horses.
so for hedges I like lilacs.
My sis made some for Thanksgiving a year or so back and yummmm.
diced sweet potato's
diced parsnips
diced turnips
baby carrots
mix a little honey and olive oil just enough to barely coat the veggies then bake until tender.
yummmmmmmmm!
this is the first year I have tried it and noticed this morning the zucchini and tomato's are flowering. Plus I have already harvested a few english peas.
Do you think you can use that directly in your garden? you say it kills everything else as well so am I going to kill my pretty little seedlings as well?
My little bitty plants started blooming today whoot! I am so ready for some zucchini.
I had somewhat the same problem last year and we had to hand pollinate as there were just not enough bees. I also found that it was somewhat better in the hot weather to water twice a day vs the every other...
A great tip save your eggshell halves and fill with soil then plant your seeds in the shells in the spring then when you are ready to transplant just plant the shell and all kinda like peat pots.
Just looked at mine this morning and they are getting ready to bloom.
Now if I remember right the potato's are ready after they bloom and the vine starts to dye off right???
I wish I could do sweet potatoes but have never had much luck even getting the slips to start. dang it.
Ron,
Have you tried the vinegar? I have heard that too but have not yet tried it because I thought it had to be horticulture strength vinegar not just your everyday white distilled in the panty stuff.
Dont worry I wont use roundup due to political issues anyhow.
A no stuffing recipe
slice squash and zucchini in a pan with a pat or 2 of butter
onion slices
cook until onions are clear then add 1 can drained corn add some grated cheese. cook until cheese melts and serve.
we eat this a lot when the squash and zucchini are comming on.
Looking for ideas to get rid of the bermuda. Horrible wretched stuff. The only thing that will kill it is Roundup or a glyphophate since it is a rhizome. I would prefer not to have to use chemicals if possible.
Any ideas?
