My DH's grandmother used to make what she had called Dilly Beans. She is not with us anymore and she was the only one who canned beans in his family. I thought it was just a family thing until I was talking to one of my girlfriends and she said she had heard of them before! I guess my family...
:yuckyuck
I have no advice to add because we don't do beets in our family (too many bad childhood memories), but I wanted to say your post is hysterical!
Thanks Pat and Simple Life. I feel better now. :D I really enjoyed canning the preserves. Something very rewarding about it. Now I'll feel better about trying the pickles and Dilly Beans my husband had hoped for. ;)
I am also canning for the first time. I was worried about botulism as well. I used a water bath for the blueberry preserves which had cider vinegar added to it. I submerged them in the water that was 2 inches higher and processed them for 15 mins and they all sealed when they cooled. Does...
Blurose, I had to tell you that i tried your spiced blueberry recipe and it is DELICIOUS!!!! It was great on waffles this morning. Thank you very much for sharing that recipe!
I love your pics! That field is beautiful.
Just out of curiosity, in the first pic of this years flock there is a black and white chicken above the buff colored one. What kind of chicken is it. Is it male or female and does it have 5 toes? Odd questions I know, but we have a 8 week old...
Wow! I never knew how fast a watermelon could grow. We planted some Crimson Sweets for the first time this year because my 2 yo loves watermelon and at $9.00 :ep each, it is an expensive fruit to love. Unfortunately, I don't think we have the right environment to grow them because our...
I looked at kraft foods and found some nice recipes. Thank you for the advice, coopy.
blurose, if you had that recipe for the spiced blueberry preserves I'd like to try it. I love to add spices to my blueberry pies, it must make a delicious preserve!
Thank you so much for the ideas. I think I'll try the baking soda and dish soap first. Does powdery mildew hurt plants? I thought you had to get rid of it if it was on veggies. If I can't control it is it a bad thing? I know it looks horrible.
I was told that copper and sulfur products...
Hi all!
I have a large amount of blueberries and I was wondering if anyone had a good recipe for jam or preserves. I plan on freezing some for use in the winter, but I would like to get some jam out of them since my DH and I love it on pancakes and toast.
I have yellow squash leaves with some round, white, fuzzy patches. Only a few of them have it so far, but I'm guessing it is powdery mildew. We have been having a very long humid spell here and I have been trying to do everything to avoid this, but I have it.
What can I do to get rid of it...
Thank you so much for the advice! I'm going to see if I can harvest some seeds for next year. I really like these plants. Great in late spring for color and texture.
My son has been getting the peas each day and we just picked the last of the turnips. We had our first green beans and the first little green tomatoes are starting to grow! :weee We also had an explosion of zucchini flowers!! Can't wait for them to ripen.
You can use commercial spray. Some of them reach 20 feet. You can do what my DH and I do and spray it with a hose. Depending on the hornet, once the site is disturbed, they sometimes will not attempt to rebuild. We did have white faced hornets, which can be nasty, and we did use the spray on...
I have verbascum plants in my front butterfly garden that has flowered already for the year. Now there are small, green, hard, berry looking objects on the spires where the flowers were. I am inclined to guess that they are seed pods, but I was wondering if they self seed or if I can collect...
I fry zucchini breaded, like eggplant, and then make it into parmesan (sp?) for my 2 yo. He can't take the acid in the eggplant, so it is a nice alternative.
I've never tried to dehydrate them though. Hmmm, I may need to get mine out when they start to ripen. ;)
