    Pea seed question

Hello everyone! We would like to plant some more snap peas for a later summer harvest. I was wondering when the best time to do that might be. Are they only a cool weather crop or can I plant then in the next week or so for end of July - mid Aug. harvesting? Thanks!

    Pea Pods!

Just thought I'd share....we got our first pea pods!!! :dance The first one was finally big enough to "bring in." I had to describe to my DH what it was like. I picked it, washed it with the hose, and ate it. I told him it could not have been any fresher, unless I nibbled it right off...

Garden contentment....this is one of the reasons we grow...isn't it?

I must say that I agree with you. I love getting up early each morning and spending an hour weeding, training the pea plants and tying up the tomatoes after feeding and taking care of our chickies. Something about the early morning sun and the general quietness of the morning. My 2 year old...

    Pea Pods!

We have one tiny little pea pod ourselves and are excitedly awaiting for the other flowers to do their thing as well! As for what can it hurt to eat one pod, Tutter? Isn't the same said of potato chips. ;)

    Apple tree question

Hello all! I planted 2 apple trees we got from a nursery in late Sept of '06. One is a Yellow Delicious the other is a Granny Smith. We pulled off the blossoms when they started blooming to let the roots take all of the energy last spring. This spring we let some of the blossoms stay on so...

    Zucchini trellis?

I was told to put newspaper under the plants as they crawled so it will help keep the weeds down and keep the Zukes off the dirt. Gotta love double duty tips! ;) Plus a good way to recycle! Also, they seem to be sweeter when they are picked small. At least that's what I thought growing up.

Nasturtiums, just got a free tray.

I grew them in the butterfly garden at the school I worked at. They like full sun to part sun and are easy growers. We couldn't always water and the soil was a little sandy, but we had no problems with them. They grew like crazy toward the end of the summer. I think the hotter it got, the...

    Shade annuals

How about Four O'Clocks? I planted them from seed in an area with not so great soil and just morning sun and they were wonderful! They have a pretty sent and bloom in the afternoon, hence the name ;) I seem to remember reading somewhere that in some climates they can be perennials because they...

    Pokeweeds

You want wild onions?! Come to my yard! They are taking over. I think I have more onions than grass now. My DH loves to just walk around and eat them while working in the yard. I need them cooked.

What came first -- the chicken or the garden?

Gardening since I was little, both ornamental and veggie. The chickens started innocently enough for eggs and our friends all thought we were nuts. Well....one just let out her new RIR chicks for the first time this past week and another is looking into which type they want to raise. :gig The...

    Never had a garden....where do I start???

Where are you located? You need to know what zone you live in so you can plant everything at the right time. Then you need to decide on a spot to plant the garden. Watch the sun move around your property and look for places with a lot of sun, because most of the veggies you want to plant need...

    My new mantra

He got his own little shovel and rake for the garden for Easter which he loves to use just like us. He also drags a full sized broom around the garden with him since the full sized spade is to heavy. It is the first "tool" he goes for when we go outside to garden. :gig I will have to take...

    My new mantra

Teaching a toddler to garden good *ohmmmm* I had my 22 month old outside in the veggie garden and taught him how to place pea seeds in the ground. He loved it, but it was painstakingly slow. I also can't wait to see where else peas will grow in the garden. I know it takes time to teach...

    Companion Gardening

We are starting up the garden for the year and want to try companion gardening as much as possible. At the risk of sounding clueless, my question is, how close is close enough to be considered companion planting? Should the plants be in the same row, or is the row right next to each other good...

    How big is your garden?

We just tilled our garden and started with the 8 foot high fencing to keep all our wild friends out, hopefully. :fl We bought the house in August '06 and have finally gotten the house to where we want it and now it is time for the outside. We have a small garden compared to others on here...

How does your state measure up??

I agree with you Miss Prissy! We just started our veggie garden. We bought the house in August '06 and didn't have the time last year with a 1 year old around. We just tilled and put up fencing around the garden last week and our son, now 21 months, loved picking out rocks and "tilling" the...

    Anyone tried fennel...

I forgot it attracted butterflies! I have a butterfly/hummingbird garden along my front walkway. I did a lot of research for the garden and made sure I had both host and nectar plants. Now, not only will I get to eat nice fresh fennel, I know it will attract more butterflies to my yard! :D

Who do you like for berry plants?

Can you guys stand another mowing story? I have a beautiful Shasta Daisy out front by the driveway. We do not have mulch around it but my DH "swears" he knows it is there. One day I noticed that it was being slowly chewed up on one side and I blamed my DH for it with his ride-on. He says...
