I, too, found out how pretty Cosmos can be. I had never heard of them before I got some seed packets in the spring. They are very easy to grow and have a long bloom time. The bees and butterflies seem to like them. Next spring, I'm gonna seed even more.
I have heard some use cornmeal for ants. I don't know about fire ants, though. I would just sprinkle it on top and not disturb them. If you disturb them, they go into attack mode and are not interested in eating or carrying it back to the queen.
I use Sure-Jell for all my jams, jellies and preserves. If you buy the box, each one comes with instructions for whatever fruit you are using. Their recipes haven't let me down yet. ;)
Most seed companies send out new catalogs in the fall. During the cold days of December & January is when I start planning my purchases. I have a small greenhouse that I start seedlings in. I try to get most of my customer's orders in by December.

It looks like a straight neck yellow summer squash. I like to pick mine when they are no more than 6" long and tender. The ones in the first photo look like they have been on the vine way too long. Slice the last one up and bread it with cornmeal or steam it.

Wow, Pat! I don't even want to think about those cold nights. (even though my garden has served me well this year). Just last week, we bushhogged it down. Very little rain in 6 weeks took its toll.
It's still in the upper 60's at night here.
